Amazon Alexa Coming to Acer Devices in 2018

Those who use Amazon Alexa may be interested to hear that Acer have announced Alexa will be incorporated into select Aspire, Spin, Switch and Swift notebooks. Initially this will be rolled out in the US via an update through the Acer Care Centre and wider support will become available in mid-2018.

Jerry Kao, President of IT Products Business of Acer Inc said, “Acer is excited to be among the first brands to bring Alexa to PCs. With industry-leading audio technology across our portfolio, we’re providing consumers the possibility to interact with multiple voice services on their notebook or desktop. Alexa lets users do thousands of things and we’re now bringing those capabilities natively to PCs.”

This will be enabled by Intel Smart Sound Technology which is an integrated audio Digital Signal Processor that is built to handle the vocal interactions. Acer’s latest notebook devices and desktops will be able to support Amazon Alexa and it won’t affect the system’s performance. Those who own compatible Acer computers will be able to use Alexa to answer questions, create lists and check their calendars. They can also ask the vocal assistant to play music or audiobooks and control smart home devices such as thermostats or lights.

Steve Rabuchin, Vice President of Amazon Alexa said, “We’re delighted that Acer will bring Alexa to PC customers. Hands-free access to Alexa on PCs can be helpful to customers in many ways, like making it simple to interact with your smart home, get news or weather, set timers, and more. This is a big step toward making Alexa available wherever customers might need her.”

Amazon Alexa can be used from a distance of up to nine feet away on notebooks like the Spin 5 and Switch 7 Black Edition thanks to the Acer Purified Voice and four digital mircophones. Alexa will also work with the Acer V6820M/i4K UHD Projector by enabling the Acer Projector Smart Home skill and asking Alexa on another device, for example the Echo or a compatible Acer computer.

“The PC is the ultimate device to bring all your digital experiences together,” said Anand Srivatsa, General Manager of Intel’s Desktop, Channel and Systems Group. “By introducing voice services like Alexa paired with Intel® Smart Sound Technology, we anticipate that the PC will serve an even more important role in maximizing your productivity, getting the most from your entertainment, and managing the smart home or office.”
