How will Large Parcels be Delivered in the Future?

Parcel delivery is beset on all sides by complex logistics that have gradually lessened over the years. After all, Victorian postal services sparked exponential growth in letter sending, revolutionising delivery through the Royal Mail. Of course, times have moved on since then, with some significant strides having been made to make postage even more accessible.

Today, with the inclusion of new technologies, gadgets have allowed delivery to escalate to the next level. Size, shape, weight – it all no longer matters. If you see something, you can get it propelled straight to your door, all thanks to new devices that make delivery something for everyone.

Delivery Drones

Drones are a stunning concept that is new to the parcel scene. Currently, most can only carry objects with a weight of under 2.6kg, which is of course fairly limiting in the grand scheme of things. It might not carry much, but still, it carries something!

As history shows, all technology starts somewhere, and the idea of a drone in and of itself was incomprehensible to all at one time. As the technology takes a few more years to develop and become more commercially available, it is reasonable to assume that the drones will get bigger and carry heavier items in a way that is safe and secure.

Green Delivery

The automobile industry has experienced nothing short of a radical change in recent times. Many drivers are going for electric powered motors over the classic diesel and petrol vehicles in a bid to tackle pollution.

Consequently, it’s fair to conclude that this revolution in vehicles will soon sweep its way across to the parcel industry. Vans and lorries could all feasibly go green, carrying larger parcels in a way that doesn’t pump poison into the air. A win-win scenario, the likelihood of greener delivery methods is a near certainty.

Self-Driving Delivery

While we all go electric, eventually more than the engine could be swapped out for some high-end machinery. Delivery means drivers, and for better or worse, they could be the next thing to be cut out of the picture.

Some companies are already testing self-driving delivery methods for pizza service, meaning that cars will soon be able to function without hands turning the wheel or feet pushing pedals. While the technology is far from completion, the future could very well introduce a delivery system that cuts out the middleman – the driver!

Digital Demand

In the olden days, customers wanting packages sent out used to do it physically. They’d wrap and box it up, lug it down to the relevant peoples, and do all the admin face to face over the counter. A tedious process, if a necessary one.

However, while this might not be classed as James Bond level gadgetry, the computer is both handy and accessible. Simple but effective, online tools for delivery are a bold leap forward that spells great things for the future. These services could even extend to on-demand apps, affording a mobile opportunity to weigh up items. If nothing else, this is an ability to consider all the delivery logistics whenever and wherever.

  1. I work in the parking industry. In the UK, on street vehicles are the responsibility of the owner, off street vehicles are the responsibility of the driver. This would mean if an automated driving vehicle cannot decide on how to park correctly, they had better park in off street locations, not in on street Council controlled areas. So this article is a little fun light reading because I would expect drone technology to safely carry 5kg parcels before we advance to driverless vans, because quite frankly fleet owners already get tons of parking tickets.
