Story and Review:
Sila (Yumna Zaidi) is a quiet, shy girl who is living in a giant joint-family household. This house is the same house as used in O Rangreza and seems to be Kashif Nisar’s favorite. Kashif Nisar directed O Rangreza as well and it’s interesting to note how, in O Rangreza, the house undergoes a more whimsical transformation.
There are more tinkly bells, dupattas wrapped around beds and splashes of colors every which way. In Dar Si Jati Hai Sila the house is stripped of all its romance while retaining a certain matter-of-fact and practical quality.
Sila’s character is shy and nervous. There is some likely history of abuse between her and Joi which is why she is always doubly nervous and jittery around him. She is also afraid of her fiance, Raheel, much to his chagrin. Raheel prefers Zaini over Sila and asks his mother if she could rearrange the match and choose Zaini over Sila for him.
His mother refuses and Raheel tries to make do with Sila as a fiance. His character is almost always annoyed with little nuance and no empathy or curiosity as to why Sila behaves the way she does. He does not want to get to the bottom of her anxiety or talk to her about what she feels, instead he snaps at her and is agitated by her agitation.
Joi is the classic predator. He has various faces and shades and manipulates everyone constantly. He pretends to be sweet to Saadia and Sila but in reality, they are merely easy prey for them. He doesn’t like Zaini much because she is on to him and dislikes him clearly. Zaini is also loud and confident, which makes it more difficult for Joi to prey on her. Saadia and Sila are quiet and often bullied so they make ideal victims for Joi.
Sikandar, Sila’s father, lives in Canada and has invested his money in some business due to which his brother and his family are mostly taking care of Sikandar’s family. This is a strong bone of contention and root of conflict between the families. Sikandar has a terrible attitude towards his daughter and wife and when Sila says she doesn’t want to get engaged, he slaps her. Uncool to the max.
The relationship between Sila and her mother is also a complicated issue. Sila resents her mother because she sees Joi hugging her. Initially we saw Saadia trying to rescue Sila but later on, Saadia also seems to suspect Sila of being ‘involved’ with Joi somehow.
All this and more are the various undercurrents that have been going on in Dar Si Jati Hai Sila – that make it an intense and gripping watch. This is not a play for the faint hearted and it is certainly not a play you can watch to pass the time. The writing is watertight and the direction is quite solid – so this deserves your focus and your undivided attention.
