Story and Review:

Aangan is the story of a Punjabi household headed by Mian Ji and his wife.

Qavi Samina Aangan

Mian Ji has four sons. Sajjad, who works at the factory.

He is married to Mian Ji’s wife’s brother’s daughter, Hajra. Hajra is the senior bahu of the house and much wiser than everyone else, though she is prone to some of the typical arguments. Hajra has two children, a son and a daughter.

Irsa Angan

Her younger daughter is very pretty and is kept out of sight for when proposals come for Zoya, Mian Ji’s youngest daughter, who is supposed to be plain looking. Mian Ji’s another son lives in Germany with his wife and kids and his other son, Zahid, doesn’t work and has turned to religion. He is married to Rubina who is Mian Ji’s wife’s sister’s daughter. Zahid and Rubina have a lot of kids and there’s one more kid on the way.

Uzma Hasan - Aangan

Asim is another one of Mian Ji’s sons who has refused to marry in the family and has married the girl he has liked, Laila. Laila is educated and does not have any children. She isn’t allowed to work and this depresses her.

Mian Ji also has a daughter, Anila who is married to Alauddin. They have children and Anila and Alauddin mostly create fusses and ruckuses.

The story begins in a proposal situation for Zoya where a lady praises Mian Ji’s wife for holding the family together.

Samina Ahmed, Irsa Ghazal - Aangan

Little does she know that all this family mainly does is squabble and fight over petty issues. Eventually this proposal will not work out and the family will continue to worry about Zoya’s age and future.

Irsa Mansha Aangan

Zoya is quiet and diligent but she has a secret passion which is to write novels and stories.

The few issues that Aangan may have had are:

  1. Why is Waseem Abbas paired with ZQ? ZQ is way younger than him. And Waseem Abbas’ most memorable role to me was recently him playing Humayun Saeed’s father in Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Sanam Saeed’s father in Zindagi Gulzar Hai. How could he possibly be accepted as the husband to a girl who is almost as young as Sanam?

  2. I know in the future Faiza Iftikhar will lay more exposition onto Laila’s storyline but I really hope they don’t vilify her for wanting to work and use her education for a good cause. In the recent episode, Asim wants his father’s permission for Laila to work and we can all hope Faiza tackles this better than the average masala drama themes.

  3. Mansha as the quiet, demure Zoya. She is slightly miscast. She shines in strong, independent, sane, vocal roles. As she did in Zindagi Gulzaar hai and Tau Dil Ka Kia Hua. Even though she’s a fantastic actress and is doing a fine enough job as Zoya, it still seems she’s a bit of a misfit in this role.

  4. The confusing title. Hum TV is currently working on a drama with the same name starring Ahsan Khan, Sonya Hussain, Sajal Ali and Ahad Raza Mir. It would be super confusing if they ended up being on the airwaves at the same time or even if people would want to go back and bingewatch.

    Iffat Umar - Aangan

Here’s what is super positive about Aangan.

  1. The dialog is crisp, despite its fairly typical storyline. It’s light and fun and frothy and something you can definitely watch as a timepass. It doesn’t have many strong messages as such, as did Faiza Iftikhar’s recent play, Mubarak Ho Beti Hui Hai, but this one has a lot of subtle messaging. In Laila’s character we see the clash of culture. In Zahid’s character we see the use of religion to hide personal insecurities. In Hajra’s character we see orthodox views clashing with the new ways of the world. In all these tensions, we see some comic situations and some tense moments – all that can give you a good relief from the rest of the intense prime time programming.

  2. Irsa Ghazal and Noor ul Hassan. The two standout performances so far are this onsreen couple. Even though we see a reprisal of “Bano and Torah” from Sang e Mar Mar in the shape of Rubina and Zahid, it is Hajra and Sajjad who have the best punchlines and steal our hearts. Irsa in O Rangreza as Mammo didn’t really shine a lot, perhaps it was her role or her interpretation for her role but the over the top softspoken tone did not work at all. However in Aangan, Irsa is in her element and absolutely spot on and natural as the sensible, wise and caring Hajra. Her accent is impeccable and her tonality is simply perfect. Noor ul Hassan’s comedic timing and sweet accent makes for a great light-hearted comedy and some befitting moments wrapping up quite nicely.

  3. An exposition on religion and how people use it to justify their weaknesses. Zahid’s character is someone who uses religion to run away from his problems. Even though Sajjad, his elder brother, tells him that Islam also asks that people work hard and earn a fair wage, but Zahid doesn’t listen. This is one of the key elements of hypocrisy of our society that is handled beautifully and earnestly by Faiza Iftikhar.

  4. The tempo of the dialog and the script is the strongest part of the play. It doesn’t lag, it doesn’t make you wish you could just skip forward to when things actually happen. And it doesn’t make you wonder, “Oh God, how many more episodes of this do I have to watch?”

So overall, for the fun dialog and comical situations, for an authentic depiction of our desi families and the many nutty, crazy yet warm and genuine plotlines, Aangan is on a must watch list.
