Review: Rapoo 3100 Wireless Mice

Despite having solely used the trackpad on my laptop for around three years, I’m still a fan of mice and prefer them to the trackpad. Although there are plenty of reasonably priced mice on the market, I didn’t see it as a necessary expense and so I’ve made do with the trackpad. However, I was given the chance to try the Rapoo 3100 5G Wireless mouse range by reichelt and I don’t think I realised how much I missed a mouse until I did. For those who aren’t aware of the brand, www.reichelt.co.uk is an online electronics retailer, with many products up to 20% cheaper. Here are my thoughts on this range.

Firstly, I had two to try so I can comment on the range rather than an individual device. I was given a sample of the green mouse and the white mouse. They have elegant designs with the green variety featuring white leaf patterns and the white mouse adorned with a red floral style of pattern. They have an ergonomic shape which is comfortable against your hand and rubbery non-grip sides to ensure it doesn’t slip out of your hand while you’re operating the mouse. In the package is the mouse, a nano receiver, 2 AA alkaline batteries which are pre-installed and a quick start guide.

It was easy to set up. The hardest thing was perhaps getting it out of the packaging, which is very protective to say the least. Make sure you have scissors handy when opening it. The mouse has a 5 GHz wireless connection and the nano receiver plugs in to the USB port easily. It’s quite difficult to remove, despite the grooves on the side of the nano receiver which are presumably designed to make inserting and removing easier. Once it’s in, it will stay in and takes effort to remove. However, if you do decide to remove it, there’s a place to plug it in to your mouse on the underside of the device, which is really handy for using it on the go.

The mouse switches on using a small sliding switch on the underside. Once activated, the upper side of the mouse has a small red light which will blink once for a second and then go off. Battery life is guaranteed for up to 18 months and obviously I can’t comment on whether that is accurate since I’ve only been using it for a couple of weeks but it’s shown no signs of running down while I’ve been using it. I did sometimes forget to switch it off though so a possible improvement would be a way of reminding users to switch it off when it hasn’t been in use for a certain time period. There’s a button on the back of the mouse closest to your wrist that is depressed and the top of the mouse pops off, allowing easy battery changing.

It has a 1000 DPI high-definition invisible tracking engine. The cursor is responsive and super sensitive, which took a little bit of getting used to. Having said that, it is stable and I had no problems with the cursor on the screen not responding to my actions or making jerky movements of its own accord, as I’ve experienced in the past. I have no complaints in that respect. I didn’t find any problems with the wireless connection. It works up to ten metres and reliability is good.

Overall, it’s an excellent range of mice for general laptop use. For gaming or graphic designing, you would probably need something more specialised but for most users, this is a good quality mouse for a very reasonable price.
