How to Recover Deleted Files from Emptied Recycle Bin

The cloud is a wonderful thing. It has allowed us to keep our files away from our computers. This means that no matter what device we have, we can always rely on those files being available. However, the cloud has its limitations. There are issues with space available, internet speed or sometimes, you don’t even have an internet connection. At times like these, everyone has to rely on files on their own machine. When those files go missing, you need to rely on a recycle bin recovery tool such as Disk Drill.

Principle behind data recovery

While Disk Drill can be used to recover data in various kinds of situations, the primary kind of recovery involves direct deletion (for example, SHIFT + DEL) or deletion from Recycle Bin. The main principle behind the recovery of such software is simple. When you delete a file on your hard drive, Windows does not go and write over that space and turn it into a blank. It simply ‘hides’ it and stops pointing towards it. For a while, the data remains in the same area. As more files are written to disk, Windows will at some stage write over those files. The trick is to recover your files before this happens.

How to use Disk Drill to recover items deleted from your recycle bin

Disk Drill offers you a solution for both. More info on how to recover deleted files from recycle bin can be found on their website, as well as information on recovering files that were directly deleted. However, we will go through some of the tips in our article.

Step 1 – Don’t let your files get over-written

Based on the principle above, this is a simple rule. The best way to ensure your files don’t get written over is to not use that hard drive anymore. Every time Windows does something, it writes a little bit on the hard drive. Your best chance is to take that disk out of your computer and use a different computer to recover your lost files.

The second thing to do is to perform a recovery as soon as possible.

Step 2 – Download and install Disk Drill

Download and install Disk Drill from their website. A free version allows you to recover up to 100MB, which is probably plenty for most critical cases.

Once installed, run the software.

Step 3 – Perform a scan

Disk Drill offers two modes of scanning your hard drive. A Quick Scan allows you to recover data that was recently lost and hasn’t been tampered with. In case you don’t find your file(s) in that, you can try a Deep Scan which is designed to find those pesky little files who like to hide.

Step 4 – Recover your files

Once you have found the files you need, simply choose which ones you’d like to recover. Hit the Recover button and let the software do its thing.

Future Protection

The best feature on offer from Disk Drill is the fact that it allows you to create a vault copy of your data. This means that even if you lose your data in the future, you will always have a back up to restore from. All you need to do is simply run the software and choose what data you want to protect.
