Review: Edifier Wireless R1010BT

At the top of many people’s wish list is a set of multi-functional speakers that will look good, provide an exceptional listening experience and pair with any device in their house. The Edifier R1010BT may fit the bill.

The Edifier R1010BT speakers come as a pair and have a classic design. They are available in either black or brown and can connect in the traditional way, using cables to team up with TVs or entertainment systems or they can be used as wireless Bluetooth speakers with any Bluetooth enabled device. I received a sample of the black unit to try and the first thing that struck me was the design. It was stylish but they definitely don’t have that slim, compact design that most contemporary speakers have. These speakers would not have looked out of place in a living room from the 1990s, yet somehow they still managed to maintain elegance and not appear too bulky. The sample I received on loan didn’t have any visible yellow at the front like the ones pictured. They were both black throughout with wooden sides. I liked the smooth, rounded edges which were a nice contemporary twist on the classic design.

All the controls are at the back of the speaker, including the power control, bass, volume and all the connecting ports. I like this as it kept the front of them sleek and uncluttered. They were really easy to set up. All it took was a few minutes to link the two speakers using the spring-mounted ports, connect them to the power source and then team them up with the chosen device. I chose to connect to my TV using the headphone socket first.

The sound quality was exceptionally clear. My first port of call was a music channel to experiment with the bass control. This isn’t a sensitive set of speakers and the volume had to be cranked up to a high level to maintain the sound expected.

Then came the Bluetooth test. At this point I decided to pair the speakers with my phone. According to the instructions enclosed the Bluetooth button has to be depressed until the blue light illuminates, when in fact all you have to do is press it once and release to achieve visibility. This aside, there were no problems pairing it with the phone at all. In this instance, the volume didn’t have to quite so high! It was far more sensitive. I think this shows that the volume on the speakers may have to be adjusted depending on which device you use and how you choose to connect, so if you’re switching between a TV and a phone for example, like I did, it’s good to keep this in mind so you don’t accidentally deafen yourself.

The wire supplied connecting the two speakers was a bit shorter than I would have liked. This could be easily fixed if you really want to have the speakers positioned quite far apart but it would be sufficient for most consumers.

Overall, I liked these a lot and I think they’re reasonably priced at £79.99. The sound quality was excellent but the thing that appealed to me most was the design. It’s not often that I fall in love with an item based purely on the aesthetics, but this was such a time. The only negative was the misleading information in the instructions about connecting by Bluetooth, but this is a minor issue.
