Innergie PowerJoy 30C – Charge your MacBook and your phone

It’s not often that one would get excited about a new charger. However, as anybody who owns a MacBook or MacBook Pro will know, a good USB C charger is hard to come by. Most phones will ironically charge directly from the MacBook charger (apart from the one that we call the iPhone!), but since the ones that come with phones are voltage limited, they wouldn’t charge your MacBook. This means that your options are pretty limited in terms of spares. You go and pay for the expensive original charger from Apple, or try and be very careful with the one you already have. Innergie have an alternative.

Features

The device comes with the following features:

  • 30W Output
  • 2 x output ports, USB C for your laptop/MacBook/phones, and a USB A for everything else
  • USB Output:
    • USB A: 5V/2.4A
    • USB C:
      • 5V/3A
      • 9V/3A
      • 12V/3A
      • 15V/2A
      • 20V/1.5A
  • Available plugs: US, UK, EU (which should cover most of the world)
  • Will charge the MacBook in 1.8 hours (on its own)

Look and Feel

The device comes as a rounded square. The business end has a connector that can take the attachment for power in, which can be the travel adaptor of your choice. It takes bit of a hard twist to make it work, but it is pretty stable once it is in.

The bottom has the two ports in it, the USB C and the USB A.

The front of the device, which faces outward, has the Innergie logo, as well as a blue LED to indicate power to the device.

The device feels pretty well made, and doesn’t look like a cheap knock off at all.

Charging

As promised, it was capable of charging the MacBook Pro at a fairly decent rate. The charger that came with my device was 60W, so this clearly won’t match the speed, but it works.

Instead, if you plug a phone in, it will work rather well and charge it as quick as any other decent fast charging set up.

However, if you plug a phone in on the USB A, and the laptop in on the USB C, it will struggle. In fact, while the device ‘powered’ the laptop, it didn’t actually charge it. As soon as the phone was fully charged, it started charging the laptop again. So, as is obvious, if the demand is too high, it will throttle the charging to your devices. In a way, that is good, as you wouldn’t want this to over heat.

Speaking of which, it does tend to get a bit toasty when under load. Nothing that scared me, but it was definitely rather hot to touch.

More information

Sadly, the device isn’t available yet. You can find out more as well as sign up for a pre-order at Innergie’s website.

Verdict

Having the ability to charge pretty much everything under the sky makes this a highly valuable charger. The fact that it will also plug in anywhere in the world is a splendid cherry on top!

This may not be available yet, but it is definitely the only one you will need in the future.
