IDHS – Digital Hand Shower: For a more comfortable shower

Don’t know about you, but to me, a shower is one of the best joys of living in the modern world. My day can’t start without one and it is one of my favourite things after a long work out or gardening (yes, I am part of that age group). While I mostly took cold showers in Pakistan, things are rather different in the UK. A good warm soak is what most of us need.

While I mostly took cold showers in Pakistan, things are rather different in the UK. A good warm soak is what most of us need. However, it is easy to go for a super warm one on a particularly cold day. Scalding is all too easy though, and the NHS treats up to 300 people a year who have scalded themselves. The problem is easy to control – be careful.

However, as lovers of gadgets, it is always great to have an actual gadget to make things better in the shower. Presenting Insignia’s Digital Shower Head. Powered purely by water pressure, it features a display that reads out temperature as well as has three colours to indicate how bad or good your temperature is.

Features

  • Powered purely by water pressure (needs around 2.5-3.4bar to power)
  • Needs no batteries
  • Standard fit, will work with all standard shower fittings of 15mm
  • Three colour LEDs to indicate when water is cold, perfect or too warm
  • Digital display reads out temperature
  • Different settings to go from steady stream to rainfall

The Shower Experience

A shower is highly dependant on the quality of your shower head. A good one can direct the water perfectly at you, while a bad one can really hinder the process.

As far as the shower goes, the experience was pretty perfect. Both the rain and the steady stream settings worked perfectly, and are easy to change to via a knob on the shower. They can be changed while taking a shower.

Temperature read out

The temperature read out is pretty perfect and easy to read. It lights up so is very easy to read. The LEDs surrounding the display also light up in various colours:

  • Blue when the temperature is below 30℃
  • Green between 30℃ and 40℃
  • Red above 40℃

A circular display also surrounds the temperature read out which indicates the flow of water.

It was particularly interesting to see how the water temperature preferences as a human vary depending on the outside temperature. Today is a hot day, around 23℃, and I went for 34℃ as my temperature of choice. Generally, I prefer around 38-40℃.

It was also interesting to see how the water temperature varies mid shower. I have an electric shower, and today the default setting that gives me around 39 was running at 44℃. It also showed how hitting the flush on your loo suddenly raises the temperature.

All in all, it was all very useful.

Does it affect the water pressure?

Since it operates on dynamo powered by water pressure, I have to say it must. However, whatever effect it has on the pressure, is too low to be detected by a lowly human.

How low can the pressure go?

The specs suggest that it can go as low as 2.5bar. However, that probably doesn’t mean much to most people. What I can tell you is that you get a display all the way to a pressure at which you don’t have a steady stream anymore.

More information

More information can be found on Insignia’s website. It retails for £39.99 and can be bought directly from them.

Verdict

While skin care and safety are a great reason to have this, it also makes a very interesting read if you’re into numbers. Get one, you won’t regret it!
