All you need to know about Google’s Android Oreo

Google unveiled Oreo, the latest version of Google Android on the day of the eclipse, August 21, 2017. The unveiling of the statue for the latest version was aired online on YouTube as well, with more than 30,000 people joining in. Android 8.0 Oreo was only revealed as O in March earlier this year, but none of us are surprised by this revelation. The tradition of naming the Android OS releases against famous confectionary and sweet brands has been upheld.

Android 8.0 doesn’t come with a lot of visual changes. The look and feel have remained the same or at least similar, across versions. However, the new release comes with tightened performance and optimization of loading time.

What you can find in the new Android 8.0 Oreo release:

These are the top 8 features we feel you should know about Android 8.0 Oreo:

  1. Project Treble: Big big change in this upgrade- Oreo is making the Android OS modular, allowing other handset makers to launch their Android upgrades quicker. The core operating system remains separate. If third party handset makers take advantage of Project Treble, it can take Android OS up several notches.
  2. Performance and Battery: Android 8.0 Oreo has improved performance and battery life tremendously. Boot time for the phone and apps has improved significantly. Google says that boot time has been cut in half. Oreo also comes with better cache management, new limits for battery life management, and persistent apps being listed in the notifications bar.
  3. Notifications: Bane of any busy person’s existence, notifications are now grouped into something that Oreo terms as channels. You can snooze these channels, customise their notification options, and manage their visibility.
  4. Picture in Picture Mode: Google has finally caught up on this feature. We have had this on other phones such as Samsung, but it’s a welcome addition in Oreo. If you are watching any video, say on YouTube or Netflix, it can continue to run on the side, while you multitask. Hangout will work great too, as you look through memos or emails, while you converse with someone on the other end.
  5. AutoFill: This is perhaps one of the most exciting features amongst others. You can use whichever passwords or cards you have saved on your browser, now on your phone. This means, no more remembering passwords or card details. You can setup your phone much faster as well.
  6. Notification Dots: This looks inspired from iOS, where apps show a dot on the app’s icon when there is a notification. You can press and hold the icon to reveal the notifications.
  7. Camera Updates: The native app for the camera has undergone an upgrade as well. Double tap the screen to zoom in 50% within the camera app. UI for the app has undergone an upgrade as well.

These are just some of the top changes we have seen in Android in the new release. More features include auto-connecting Wi-Fi, update in navigation settings, updates in the cut-paste options making it more intuitive and improvements in the night-time mode.

Google has announced that Android Oreo is being rolled out in phases starting with Nexus 6P and 5X, along with Pixel. It is also working with other brands to bring Oreo to phones by other manufacturers as well.

The verdict? Install!
