Amazon Blocking Access To Competitor’s Prices While In-Store

Many of us are bargain hunters and like to comparison shop while we are in stores. There’s nothing wrong with that and in fact, it would be silly not to chase down the best price. Quite often, those prices are found online on sites such as Amazon and with their numerous discounts and fast delivery, they are often the first stop for consumers who are comparing prices. However, now that Amazon have branched out into their own physical stores, they have been granted a patent to control what you can see or not see on your phone while you are in their stores.

The patent is called Physical Store Online Shopping Control. It will examine your search while connected to the store’s WiFi network and if you are searching for a competitor’s price it will take action to prevent you from viewing this. This technology can fully block access to particular content, such as items they sell and redirect your phone. Or it can send a sales assistant to talk to you. If the price of the item is cheaper on Amazon it can allow you to view that.

Some consumers will find this slightly creepy, or perhaps funny but it is definitely ironic that Amazon have previously encouraged consumers to do price checks using their apps and their site yet now they seem to be discouraging that. How do you feel about Physical Store Online Shopping Control?
