Daisy First Aid Courses – Learn to look after your kids

As we are about to become parents for the first time, the thought of doing a Paediatric First Aid course was quite a tempting one. I was in touch with Paula for this class, and I was quite excited to find out that the class was actually offered in the comfort of our own home! Needless to say, we found the first slot available in our calendar.

Daisy First Aid – a history

Daisy First Aid is a company run and founded by Jenni. She is a former police officer who was part of the people treating casualties at Edgeware Road tube station during its bombing in 2005. In 2014, she was subject to a terrifying experience when she had to treat a friend’s baby daughter during a choking incident. She realised that first aid was not something that was normally offered to parents, and many parents lack the skills to perform basic first aid actions.

Her research led her to find classes that were aimed at the corporate market. They often show frightening videos and talk about distressing stories. This is the last thing a parent wants to be subjected to. She wanted to create something that helped parents feel happy, confident and empowered, rather than terrified and intimidated.

With that in mind, Jenny started the Daisy First Aid company. 3 years in, it is a multi-award winning company, having been featured in numerous publications. Daisy First Aid offers fun and fear-free first aid classes designed specifically for parents and child carers. In a two-hour class, which takes place in the attendees own home or local venue, the world of emergency first aid unfolds, as parents, grandparents and caregivers interact and learn the skills they need to save a life and to treat the most common accidents and emergencies. Babies are very welcome in these classes too.

How it works

It is rather simple. You decide what kind of class you want from the following:

  • Parent classes (2 hours – at your home or a local venue)
  • Paediatric First Aid Certification – 6 and 12 hour courses
  • School First Aid for teachers and staff (2 hours)
  • School First Aid for students

After that, you either find your local class, or find your nearest rep and give them a call or an email. They will get back to you and organise what suits you best.

You can also go straight to finding your nearest class and do the process that way.

The course

Our course, as already mentioned, was delivered by Paula. She brought all the equipment needed for the class with her, which included demo equipment, images that showed various conditions or highlighted human anatomy, CPR dolls, and even an AED (automated external defibrillator) training kit!

The course itself followed an agenda, but was conducted in a fairly warm and non-formal way. Questions were encouraged, and Paula constantly checked if we were okay with the instructions. There was plenty of opportunity to practice each skill as well.

The class covered some of the following:

  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty
  • Recovery Positions
  • Shock
  • Resuscitation & CPR
  • Choking
  • Head injuries
  • Fever
  • Febrile Seizures
  • Bleeding
  • Burns
  • Fractures
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Meningitis
  • Other Childhood conditions.

Paula’s mannerism was extremely relaxed, which made us feel very comfortable and confident.

It was more like having a friend over who is giving you great advice. She was very encouraging throughout. No amount of questions phased her, and thanks to the varied experiences she has had in her career, she was able to answer everything.

First Aid Kit and Reference Material

At the end of the course, we were given the option to buy a booklet about the course as well as a First Aid Kit, both of which we happily acquired. The booklet serves as a handy reference guide, while the first aid kit is a child focused kit, containing 70 items. It comes in a handy small case, which can easily sit in a handbag. It even contains 8 bravery stickers!

The first aid kit includes: 1 x EVA Case, 1 x Instruction book, 1 x tweezers, 1 x scissors, 10 x saline cleansing wipes, 3 x sting relief pads, 1 x disposable gloves, 20 fun plasters, 5 knuckle bandages, 3 adhesive dressings, 1 x bandage, 2 x eye bandage, 10 x safety pins, 1 x CPR face shield, 1 x Instant Ice pack, 8 x bravery stickers, 1 x adhesive plaster tape

More information

You can find out more about Daisy First Aid via their website. The cost for the course is £25 per head, and they generally want a minimum of 4 people to complete a class.  The direct link to Paula’s class can be found on their website too, or via her branch Facebook page. You can check out her 5-star reviews too.

For the booklet, the cost was £5, while the First Aid kit was £15, so total the cost was £20 for both the items.

The First Aid Kit is also available via their website.

Verdict

All in all, I will definitely recommend this course to anybody who is a parent, about to become one, or just happens to be near or around children. The price is pretty competitive compared to what is on offer elsewhere (such as St John’s), and the fact that Paula and her colleagues will come to your home makes it a pretty sweet deal!
