Onkyo and Pioneer Release Chromecast Built-In Voice Control Firmware Updates

Chromecast Built-In

Today sees two brands, namely Onkyo and Pioneer, release firmware updates on a range of their products that activate Chromecast built-in voice control. This intuitive firmware update supports Google Home and will support audio devices introduced in the future featuring Google Assistant.

Chromecast built-in lets consumers share music from podcasts, Internet radio or other Chromecast-enabled apps to home entertainment systems including home hi-fi components, AV receivers, home theatre systems, and network speaker systems. It is supported on Apple products such as iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, Chromebook, Android systems, and Chrome browsers on Mac, Windows and Linux PCs. There is no password entry, pairing or device setup required to connect via Chromecast built-in, so long as the devices being used are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network and apps are Chromecast enabled. A list of Chromecast enabled apps can be found here

To operate, the user asks Google Home to locate music from streaming services and play through Onkyo or Pioneer devices. It is also possible to instantaneously control volume or song selection through vocal commands. Available commands are dependent on the specifications of Google Assistant and the streaming service though. Chromecast built-in allows playback of single or multiple audio sources simultaneously through Chromecast-enabled speakers and permits use of other apps while streaming, without disruptions in playback.

Sending audio to the receiver is simple and done wirelessly with a tap or click of an icon built into Chromecast-enabled apps. Sampling transmission rates of up to 48 kHz are supported, providing pristine CD-quality lossless sound. Devices with Chromecast built-in have dual-band 5 GHz/2.4 GHz Wi-Fi which maintains the original fidelity and provides clear, stable, interference-free streaming with less dropouts and buffering.
