Review: Motorola VerveOnes Music Edition – Better sound, same connectivity issues

The concept of wireless headphones has evolved quite a lot in the last few years. From going to your standard Bluetooth headsets, which did not need to physically connect to your device to the age of Apple’s AirPods. Here at OxGadgets, we have seen them all. When Motorola first announced their Verve Ones truly Wireless headphones, we got very excited. The only thing close to them in existence back then was the EarIn.

The sound quality was good, though it seemed like the truly wireless experience came at a price. Things improved with some updates, but generally, the experience was rather poor.

Now that we live in a world which has players like Apple offering superior connectivity, Verve are back with another edition of the Verve Ones. This time they are focused on sound, and interestingly, come at a better price of just £150 compared to £229 for the original ones.

In the box

  • Charger Case
  • 1 pair of headsets
  • Micro USB Cable
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Eargels

Features

  • Truly wireless earbuds
  • Charger case included to carry and charge them
  • HD Sound
  • IP rated to keep it safe against rain and sweat
  • Up to 8 hour battery life

Look and Feel

To be fair, the look and feel is pretty much exactly the same as the previous version. The only difference is that the device now comes in a shade of white and grey instead of black and orange, or just black.

You get the charger case, which is like a small tube or bottle, which can be rotated to expose or encase the earbuds.

Inside you get a couple of earbuds that can easily be docked in or out.

On one side is the micro USB charging port as well as a status LED.

The earbuds themselves feature very little, apart from a tiny status LED on both and some exposed pads to dock it. The earbud marked R for right, also has a button on it to let you do things like pairing and answering/rejecting calls.

The Fit

Much like the last ones, the fit is pretty decent. You think they’ll pop out when you see them, but they are comfortable and they sit happily in your ears while you about with your daily life. You can run, you can jog, you can cycle. They happily sit there.

Included in the package are other eargels to allow for the best fit.

Sound Quality

So, is the sound any better than before? It feel clearer and more detailed. A bit heavier on the bass. It won’t replace any serious headphones, but for this kind of convenience, you are getting a pretty decent sound quality.

Connectivity issues still remain

Our major disappointment about the Verve Ones previously was connectivity issues. Sadly they still remain. Often you have to unpair and repair, or keep trying to connect and disconnect the device. It is 2017 and we just don’t really live in that kind of a world any more.

Previously software updates have improved this, so there is hope, but we can only really wait and see if it works any better.

Obviously, back then, there wasn’t much competition. Now you have thousands of people showing off how well their earpods connect to their iPhone as soon as they open the box.

More information

More information on these can be found on Motorola’s Verve Life website.

They RRP is £150, but they retail from around £120, and can be bought from various online shops such as Amazon.

Verdict

While the sound quality and the portability is great, the connectivity issues still leave a lot to be desired. We hope for a software fix.
