Review: Logitech C922 – Pro Stream Webcam – the camera for all kinds of light situations

Logitech C922

Webcams are not quite the fad that they used to be. As we have moved from desktops to laptops, integrated webcams have pretty much given us all the uses we needed from them. However, most webcams that come with computers are bad quality, and are designed to be just ‘good enough’. Well known brand Logitech still sell quite a good number of webcams, and for good reason too. They are good, they come with hardware acceleration and features built in, and they can record 1080p video.

We look at their latest offering, the C922 Pro Stream Webcam.

Look and feel

At around 95 mm wide and 29mm high, this camera is designed to give you a wide angle feel. The design is fairly standard, with an included clip/bracket that means you can sit this on top of your monitor or laptop.

Also included is a standard tripod connector, and a pretty decent tripod.

Included on the front is the camera, the logo and the promise of 1080p as well as the two mics. Also included are a couple of LEDs around the camera which indicate that the camera is on.

It is a fairly light and portable device, though the need for a cable to be plugged in means that it isn’t as portable as a mobile phone.

The video sample

The best way to review this was to record some video and take some photos. While the photo samples are below, we have the video below for your pleasure.

It is kind of a mini-review, so you might get most of what you want from it!

Particularly impressive is how it auto focuses and corrects itself in darkness.

The microphones though, are quite a bit soft, and could be louder.

How does it compare to a normal webcam

So to start with, we compare it to the normal webcam that comes with our Toshiba Chromebook, which is what we are testing this with.

For the sake of your pleasure, the image has been left as original quality, so you can click on it and zoom as much as you like.

The image on the left is the normal webcam, while the one on the right is from the C922.

As you can see straight away, there are more megapixels. You also have better light and colour, less noise, and a better smile.

The camera comes really onto its own when you turn the light off.

Here is a comparative test:

Once again, the standard computer webcam is on the left, while the image from the C922 is on the right. Notice how grainy and noisy the image on the left is. You can hardly recognize me, while the image taken with the C922 is focusing on my face, and while it makes me look a bit flushed, it is pretty good for a room with only the computer monitor to light up my face.

Good light vs bad light

While you can see it live in action during the video, here is a little gif that shows how the camera autocorrects itself when you turn the light off. Since we have a special appearance from Chilly’s tail, we also notice how the focus tries to follow her, and then brings me into focus.

Also included below are the same photos as above, but comparing the same show from the C922, with the light on and off.

Background Replacement

Another feature that this offers is Background Replacement. This is one thing you can’t do on the Chromebook and need to download the associated software. Once you have that, you can put up a bespoke background behind yourself. Now this one is not as good as Intel’s RealSense, but that is a costly and expensive technology that relies on 2 cameras. This one is purely software, and tries its best. There are glitches, and part of you may disappear into the background, but it can be useful if you want to lay your gaming behind you or just need to hide all the mess.

More information

More information on the device can be found on the Logitech website.

The device can be bought from various online retailers such as Amazon, and retails for around £84.99.

Verdict

Among the decent webcams out there, the camera sits in the midrange price range. For that, it offers a pretty decent light correction and video/photo quality. The only qualm is the microphone which doesn’t quite have much volume to it.
