Look and feel

The device has two distinctive features. The bold and defined aluminium grill, and the handle. The handle makes the device really easy to carry, and it can be moved around, giving it two distinctive positions so that the device can be perched at an angle.

On top of the device are three buttons, which offer power and volume control, as well as an LED that gives you the device status. Also on top is the NFC pairing area.

On the right is a panel with a rubberized protective cover on top, which hides the charging port, a USB port to allow you to charge other devices as well as a 3.5mm port to plug in music from other sources.

Setup

The setup is fairly simple and easy, in fact made easier if you use the NFC option. Turn on Bluetooth on your device, look for this, and pair. Simples.

Sound

So, what is on offer from this device? Quite a lot, as it happens. Like most good devices in this range, it manages to pack a decent punch. However, the magic comes from the DSP (Digital Signal Processing) as well as the DRC (Dynamic Range Control), which combine to give you a well balanced sound. The overall experience is a smooth sound, which feels good whether it is loud or soft.

We tried it with a few genres and it delivered well.

Trying it at maximum sound also gave us a reasonable output, with little distortion.

Is it loud enough to fill a basketball stadium? Not quite. But for a decent sized room or an outdoor picnic, the sound levels are perfectly adequate.

Most importantly, can this be the sole device at a rave? No, not quite, but if you want a mini rave in your house or back garden, by all means!

(The statement above also assumes the fact that raves can be bigger than an average back garden).

More information

More information on the Edifier Rave can be found on the Edifier website. It is available from various online retailers, such as Amazon, and retails for £229.

Verdict

On the face of it, it feels a bit expensive. However, once you have a feel of the device, admire the looks, and more importantly, have had a chance to give it a listen, it all seems to make sense. It is one of the more expensive speakers for what it offers, but it is all about the little things with this one.
