Computer Security – The various aspects, risks and what you can do to protect yourself

As we start to rely more and more on our computational devices, the importance of computer security becomes more and more important. Computational devices are not just restricted to your computer at work or home any more. These days we carry computers in our pockets, in the form of smartphones, and give computers to our children to play games and watch videos on, in the form of tablets. As we start letting the Internet of Things devices into our lives and home, we are introducing another range of computational devices to our lives.

Sadly, anything and everything that talks to the outside world is at risk, and computer security is a very important way of protecting everything.

Of course, whether you’re a personal user or working at an office, being aware of computer security is the need of our times. News of people foolishly leaving important data while commuting on trains as well as in public places is all too common, and a bit of security awareness is very important. Of course, if you’re somebody who works in a sensitive industry such as finance, security, aviation, or pretty much any large corporation which handles a lot of data or personal information, being aware of the risks and how to deal with them is of utmost importance.

Following are some easy to follow tips that should help keep your system secure:

  • Never underestimate the power of a good anti-virus tool. A lot of them exist out there, and they all cost everything from free to expensive. In fact, you even get one with Windows these days. Make sure it is installed and running, and the virus definitions are up to date.
  • While a lot of people are good at installing anti-virus software, firewalls are often forgotten. Once again, Windows packs its own service in, but most anti-virus software will offer you one too.
  • Be aware of clicking on any links, specially in emails or on websites you don’t trust.
  • Be aware of any kind of website that triggers an auto download or takes you to a website you weren’t expecting to. A lot of main stream websites get hacked as well, so just because you opened something like BBC doesn’t mean you’re definitely on the right website. A quick and easy way to know if you are is to read the website address.
  • Never install any software that randomly downloads on to your computer.
  • Be careful when you install any browser plug-ins.
  • Download software and plug-ins from official websites.
  • Keep your software up to date, no matter how annoying that is.
  • Keep your browser up to date. This is important enough to be mentioned on its own.
  • Feel free to delete any spam email without checking it.
  • While staying away from giving your password away is an obvious one, try and avoid giving out your email address too.
  • Use a VPN system to protect yourself from external hacking and tracking.
  • Prevention instead of cure is definitely the way to go with security. It is a lot easier to prevent any issues to begin with, but a lot harder to plug anything that went wrong.
  • Don’t forget your smart phones. They need protection too, and the same principles apply to them as well.
  • Have a router that comes with a built-in firewal.
