Look and Feel

Probably the best way to describe the SoundWave is the word ‘boxy’. While the case itself has a soft touch to it, the speaker has the feel of a big brick. The front shows off a metal grill with the Gear4 logo, while the top has a bunch of buttons for control. The buttons are nice to press, and easy to use.

An LED also shows whether it is charging (red), or when it is connected (blinky blue).

At the back is an on-off flick switch, a micro USB port to charge it up, and a line-in connection.

Setup

The setup is as simple as it gets, turn it on, find it, pair it, and you’re good to go.

Ease of use

Once paired, this is incredibly easy to use. A fairly simple feature set means that there isn’t anything complicated. You turn it on, and use the play/pause button to play music, volume buttons to adjust the volume, and go between tracks.

Of course the music control functionality works with Bluetooth but not with a line in connection.

Sound Quality

For a set of speakers sold at such low price, these do pack in quite a punch. Loud and powerful sound was a characteristic immediately evident from these, and while you may not be playing classical music through these, they are rather useful for parties, busting out the beats. Sound is a bit bass heavy, which works well in the favour of party music too. Big halls and rooms should be ideal for this speaker, though since it isn’t waterproof, outdoor use may be limited.

Portability

A bit on the boxy and heavy side, this isn’t the most portable of speakers. However, with 6 hours of battery life, it doesn’t travel too bad, and can be transported from site to site, or room to room with no hassle. Outdoor use may be a bit limited due to the fact that it isn’t waterproof, but nothing stopping you from using this on a good day!

More information

More information on the SoundWave can be found on the Gear4 website:

They can be bought from around £25, and can be found via various online retailers including Tesco, HMV, etc.

Verdict

These speakers deliver the goods at a very low cost, while keeping the functionality and feature set rather simple.
