Review: Anywhere SIM and Anywhere Phone

The scenario is all too familiar. You get a phone SIM that ticks your price boxes, but doesn’t work near work. Or if it does, it is not really that economical. Or if it ticks those two boxes, it stops working between your home and work. UK may want to show off itself as a technologically advanced country, but it is not a hidden fact that most networks don’t really cover all of UK, however, combine 2 SIMs and suddenly you get a lot better reception. Well, what if you could combine three instead of two, and not need to use two SIMs either? That is the concept behind Anywhere SIM, which works between O2, EE and Vodafone, and roams between the three, and changes to whichever one works best. In a way, this isn’t that different to how your phone behaves abroad, hence the use of the term ‘roam’.

A certain amount of complexity comes from this, but Anywhere SIM have made it all simple, both in terms of SIMs on offer as well as price options.

The following SIMs are on offer:

  • Anywhere Home – works anywhere in the UK, make calls on O2, receive them on any network
  • Anywhere UK – works anywhere in the UK
  • Anywhere EU – works anywhere in EU

You have various options and rates, that vary with time available and texts/minutes on offer. They can be bought in sizes of multiples of £10, and more details are available on the website.

As a general rule, the following rates are on offer:

  • 10p per minute call (UK) or 12p per minute call (EU)
  • 5p per text
  • 10p per MB data

More information on the various rates on the SIMs section of their website.

A range of phones are also available from the website, including the Doro 508, which Anywhere SIM have packaged in a bundle as the Anywhere Fone, costing only £90, offering the following:

  • 1 x Doro 508 device & charger
  • 1 x anywhere sim lite
  • 1 x £60 credit with 365 days service
  • calls – 10p per minute
  • sms – 5p per message
  • data – 10p per mb

Of course, the Doro 508 is a simple and easy to use phone which packs in a lot of features, including a torch, assistance button, and the basics. You are practically getting the phone free with the bundle.

So, how well does the service work? Pretty seemless. It isn’t that different from roaming, so as you go from an area of one bad network to another, you will automatically switch to the other. Interestingly, my work is near Didcot, another office near Woodstock, and I live in Oxford. This means that there are plenty of patches in the middle that offer bad signal, and to be honest, Oxford the city is pretty bad for mobile reception too. The gaps were filled in nicely.

One interesting thing I noticed was the lack of Three Mobile UK on the available networks, though I am not sure if that is up to them, or Anywhere.

Either way, this is definitely a great service for people who live in areas of poor reception (I am looking at you, Cornwall!), and still be connected.
