Goodmans Nod – DAB Digital Alarm Clock with USB Charging

Goodmans NOD

Waking up is not something I am a big fan of. Not being a morning person, I am a bit fussy about my alarm clocks and tones that I wake up to, for the simple reason that I often end up hating whatever song or tone is being used. For this reason, I often turn to Alarm Radios, as they give you something new to wake up to every day. The NOD by Goodmans is an ironically named Alarm Clock that features a built in DAB radio alarm, as well as a couple of charging points to keep your phones and tablets charged on the bedside table.

Features

  • DAB+ digital and FM RDS clock radio
  • 2 x USB charging (1 x smartphone / 1 x tablet)
  • White out of black dimmable display
  • Ascending alarm volume
  • Right hand side control button (rotary dial with push select, volume / tuning)

Look and feel

What sets this apart is probably the big dial on the right side. That dial is used to control both the volume as well as go through channels and select them.

The front also features the display for the radio, as well as a big ‘snooze’ button.

The top has a set of buttons to allow for various settings, as well as the vents for the speaker.

The back features power in, a couple of USB ports, and an AUX-IN jack as well as a headphone jack.

At 119mm x 131mm x 116mm, this packs in quite a compact footprint, making it ideal for even the busiest of bedside tables.

Setup

Like most DAB radios, the initial setup comprises of a scan of various channels available on DAB, and listening to them.

To set up alarms, you press the Alarm button, and the Wizard carries you through.

Not much else is needed, apart from plugging it in!

Ease of use

Once setup, you just choose your DAB stations and the volume using the big dial on the right, and all is good.

LCD Backlight

The LCD backlight comes in three modes, from bright to dim. In normal mode, i.e. standby or radio play, the snooze button can be used to cycle through the various settings.

Alarm feature

The Alarm can be set to be a buzzer, or one of the radio stations that you choose. You can set how long it plays, and you can also set the maximum volume. The alarm always starts softly and slowly picks up the volume to the maximum you set.

The big button in front can be used to snooze your alarm for 9 minutes.

Sleep function

The sleep function is the inverse of Alarm in a way. You can set how long you want your radio to play before it automatically turns off.

Sound Quality

A small footprint and a small radio mean a small speaker has been packed into this, and it is a single speaker at that. As such, don’t expect to be blown away by the quality or the power, but it delivers well on both fronts. Sound is clear, nice, and loud enough. Perfect for a bedroom, not so much a living room!

Charge your devices

This not only comes with two ports, it also delivers a total of 2.1A between the two. This means that you can easily charge two phones overnight, or one tablet.

Verdict

This clever little device takes your Alarm to the next level, packing in neat features like dual USB charging ports. All this at a very affordable price too.

Update – Jan 2019

The clock on this one was ever so problematic, would always lag behind real time unless you were actively listening to music all day. Till over the last few days, it totally stopped working, and was stuck at 00:00. Sadly this meant it had to be got rid of, as this was the one that sat beside my bed, telling me the time.

A shame as otherwise this is a good device, but as a bedside clock radio, the clock not working is just too annoying!
