How to continue your fitness plan into 2016

DW Fitness

January is sure to mark a return to the health and fitness bandwagon for many. It sounds cliché but nothing gives you the motivation to reach new goals like the start of a new year. But where do you even start?

In a world obsessed with fad diets, health tracker apps and kale, it can be hard for newcomers to find their place. However, new research from DW Fitness Clubs has found that many of us still head for the gym to help us kick start our journey. 1 in 4 people said they plan to join a new gym in 2016.

Whilst many of us would assume fitness gadgets and the great outdoors will suit us just fine, the comfort of the gym and extra assistance on hand seems to be too alluring for those who need some support.

So if you want to follow in their footsteps, here’s how you can smash your new goals in 2016:

  • Try a new class

Shake up your routine with a different exercise and learn something new. Whether it’s yoga or a fast-paced body pump class, you’ll find that you’re more focused when you immerse yourself in a new experience. You’ll get a renewed sense of motivation that drives you to conquer your new activity.

  • Find your gymspiration
DW Fitness also found that many of us are worried about how people will perceive us in the gym. In fact, 48% of us are apprehensive about going to the gym because we worry that we’re not as fit as other members.

The truth is, when you’re pounding the treadmill the last thing anyone is thinking about is how fit the other people around them are. Nobody is going to judge you as they are too busy working on their own goals!

Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with you getting a little competitive in the gym! Have you ever seen someone working out and thought ‘I better go a bit faster!’? That’s gymspiration and it can really help to motivate you when used in a positive manner.

  • Work on your form
What’s really important when working out is that you’re doing it right. You really don’t want to injure yourself, as it could seriously impact your day-to-day activities and put your progress back further whilst you recover.

When you first start your new plan, see if a friend, fellow gym member or an instructor can show you the ropes to ensure you’re not risking an injury. 31% of respondents in DW Fitness’s survey mentioned their fears of using the equipment in the wrong way, so you’re not alone if you don’t get it first time.

Learning how to use the equipment in your gym is essential to make the most of your workout. You could be wasting your time performing exercises in the wrong way, using up energy without really getting the results you want.

The most important thing is to make sure you find a plan that is right for you. If you force yourself into someone else’s mould, you’ll be struggling to meet your 2016 goals. Go in with an open mind to new exercises and monitor your progress to stay on your A game.
