It is almost impossible to use the word tablet without thinking about iPads. In fact, I have often heard people mentioning iPads as if they are the only tablet in existence. While this isn’t true, Apple have to be credited to making the product that actually made tablets not only popular and useful, but something everybody desired. While Apple have only gone and announced their Surface-isque iPad Pro, we have a look at the former tablet champion from Apple, the iPad Air 2.

Look and feel

A lot of effort has gone into getting the iPad where it is from the original version. The words thinner and lighter are almost synonymous with the iPad Air 2, and with good reason too. Thin, sleek, and good in your hand, there is plenty that can be said about the device, and none of it bad. Then again, love or hate Apple, nobody can ever claim that an Apple device doesn’t look good, and this is no exception. The overall finish is great, feels smooth, and looks and feels premium and worthy of the Apple badge on the back.

The device features a retina screen in front, which looks great in all lights. There is also the fingerprint sensor with the home button embedded in the front. On the front, there is also the front camera for web chats.

The rear has another camera, and the volume rocker keys can be found on the side, while the power button sits on the top. The bottom has the lightning port as well as a grill for sound.

Being thin and light is also part of the package, so you don’t have to worry about adding extra weight to your backpack, or about holding it for long periods of time.

The fingerprint sensor

After the success found on the iPhones, the iPad finally has the fingerprint sensor, and it works just as well as it does on the phone. It takes a few milliseconds for your fingerprint to be analysed and read, and from there you can unlock. Of course, if you can’t get it to work, you still have the option to unlock the screen using your pin. Cold fingers and gloves are an obvious reason, though I am sure other ones can be thought of too.

iOS8

A lot of changes were announced under the hood in the new OS, and it all works smoothly on the new iPad, thanks to the faster A8X processor packed in. Most apps run smooth, and it works great for most uses.

Productivity

I have been on many a foreign trip with my iPad (one of the older models), and it is often the only device I need (in addition to a Bluetooth keyboard). This iPad takes it one better by giving you access to apps such as Pages for free and allowing you to get work done better and quicker, thanks to the higher resolution screen and the enhanced battery life.

The battery life easily lasts through the whole working day, and is rated at around 10 hours depending on usage.

Accessories

It has to be said as well, that there is probably more accessories available for this device than any other tablet out there. So, if you like personalization, or just your accessories, this is a great tablet to get!

Verdict

To me, the iPad has always been the star of the show as compared to the iPhone, which only looks like a smaller iPad to me. It is my favourite Apple device by far, and the iPad Air 2 only makes the experience better.
