Headphones that glow with EL tubes? I will have some of that. Mostly because I love EL tubes! But if you told me that a simple headset would need charging, I would have looked at you twice before understanding what you mean. See, the first thing that got me about these headphones was the fact that they needed charging to be used in the ‘glow’ mode. Of course, they can be used as regular headphones without it, but I want these to glow damn it!

Glow?

Oh yes. You can be that guy or girl, who walks around the night, with their headphones glowing to the beat of their music. A few years ago, or perhaps a decade ago, I would have been rather concerned about the attention that these may attract, specially since the days the ‘Apple white headphones’ were deemed attractive to the wrong kind of crowd.

However, if glow is your thing, or EL tubes are your thing, go for this!

Oh, by the way, EL stands for Electroluminescent tubes, which basically glow like a glow stick when current is applied to them. They are not exactly the lightest on battery usage, hence why everything is not covered in them. And if you still don’t know what I am talking about, think Tron!

Look and Feel

In a way they look much like any smartphone headset without the EL bit, apart from the fact that the microphone/button bit in the middle is rather large. Included in that bit is also a micro USB port, which is used to charge the EL tube battery, and hold the circuitry to drive that.

The cable is definitely long enough.

The over all build and quality of the earphones themselves is a bit average, but at the price, you wouldn’t be expecting much.

Sound Quality

Much like the build, the sound is a bit average, and you can hear just a bit of static when you press the button to turn the EL on or off. Low on bass, and some intense songs might sound just a tad on the tinny side when played using these.

The Glow, part deux

So… how does the glow actually roll?

To enable it, you press the Play button on the headset for a couple of seconds, where the EL glows to acknowledge that it is on. After that, once you play music, it blinks for every beat you go through. As the music plays out its beats, so does the EL. All good, all fancy, all fun.

More information

More information and the link to buy these can be found on the Gadget Genie website:

They retail for £18.95.

Verdict

As far as novelty items go, these score full marks. Yeah, they are not the best headphones out there, but for that price, you get a great product which has a magical glow thrown in.
