Why Does My Business Need a Firewall?

You’re not the Government, the BBC or Microsoft – so why would hackers target your small business?

There are a number of reasons why hackers may target you:

Small companies don’t spend as much on security

The first step a hacker often takes when plotting their attack is to test for the vulnerability of a website.  Usually done with what is known as a ‘scanner’ – a piece of equipment that is commonly available that queries thousands upon thousands or internet addresses, looking for any network with openings.

If successful, this allows a hacker to enter.  In a real-life scenario, this is similar to a burglar sneaking down your street at 1am trying every front door in hope to find one that is left unlocked.  If it’s your house that gets burgled, it’s nothing personal – you just made it easier on them by not locking your door.

Hackers want your bandwidth

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks became more common-place and widely spread news in 2014.  They involve a number of computers bombarding an internet server with data to the point that it is overloaded and causes the server to go offline.

Your identity is of value

If a hacker is able to access your email address he is able to impersonate you.  The benefits to him could be raiding your contacts list and pretending to be you whilst you’re not aware.  From here they can find out a whole host of details, such as financial details including order history and account numbers on invoices.

Hackers want your computer power

It is possible that a DDoS attack keeps a low enough profile that they go unnoticed.  Once inside, the hacker has free reign over your network.  If they’re not after credit card details or trade secrets, there are mo plentiful resources on offer.

This can be your CPU cycles – the processing power in each computer that is on your network.

To help prevent OxGadgets from any potential hacks, we have teamed up with LSA Systems for our computer and network security.  So far, so good.
