Thoughts: Microsoft’s announcements

The last two weeks have been quite interesting in the world of tech. You’d think at the end of something like CES you’d have a quiet few weeks.

No. The world of technology doesn’t work like that, and while history has proven over and over again that timing is everything, it still seems to make announcements in and out of shows at random.
The big news from last week was of course that of Windows 10, and Hololens.
Windows 10 promises free upgrades to anybody running Windows 7 or 8/8.1, and the Technical Preview is already available. Sadly my few years old laptop is not compatible with Windows 8, so I doubt I’ll be upgrading.  It brings back the good old start menu from the pre Windows 8 days and it offers Cortana, the Microsoft answer to Siri and Google Now, to everyone. Windows 10 also promises similar performance and UK whether you use it on the phone, a tablet or your PC. All in all, good promises, sticking to a UK that works, and some new features.
In fact, them promising support for Raspberry Pi now means that you will see more and more of Windows 10. Love Linux as much as you can, you have to admit it that the simple user still prefers Windows.

Then there was the news of Spartan browser. That, which has spelled the long and miserable existence of Internet Explorer to its inevitable end. I haven’t don’t much research about features and performances, but what bothers me is that they didn’t call it Sparta.  Imagine all the memes!

Some of my own humble offerings… !

Best of all though, was the announcement of Hololens. A headset that takes what was offered by Google Glass and takes it to a new level.

We have all seen the video by now, but just in case you missed it…
However, like all new tech, there are issues. It looks and seems beautiful, but do you really think you’d be wearing it all the time? At work AND at home?

I imagine it is the start of something beautiful, but not the final product. We could have some tech packed into contacts maybe? Being an Electronics engineer, I can tell you that won’t be easy!
