What is it?

This small device, more or less a keychain, is exactly that. However, thanks to Bluetooth technology, it has the ability to lock and unlock your computer (Windows and Mac OS) based on proximity. It also acts as a locator and can pair to your smartphone (Android/iOS) to give you a location based alert, for example if you lose your keys.

Look and feel

The device itself is quite slick and small. Perfectly dimensioned for anything that you will slip in and out of your pocket, and the provided key-ring helps you add keys. It comes with an extra battery as well.

Usage – computer locking/unlocking

Quite simple really. You download the software, set it up, and you’re good to go. Once done, walk away (with the device) and your computer locks. You come back and it unlocks. As simple as that. If you want extra security, you can also set your computer up such that it only unlocks when you’re both in proximity and enter a password.

Usage – with your smartphone

Perhaps a very common usage that can be found in other devices too. The device acts as a locator, which pairs with your smart phone. Apps are available for both Android and iOS. You can use it various ways, for example if you left your keys behind you, and you went out of range, they will send you an alert. A similar thing applies in the opposite case, where you’ll get an alert if you left your phone behind. Handy in today’s busy life, where it is so easy to do so when you’re juggling so many things.

Ease of use

I may have already tried many such things, but I found that the software and the apps were fairly simple and easy to use.

Buying options

I can’t seem to find any UK buying options, but for a flat fee of $15, they are happy to deliver worldwide. A single GKChain, is available from $49.99, a two pack from $89.99 and a five pack from $209.99. On top of that, there is currently a Thanksgiving deal going to let 20% off.

It is available in black, silver, orange, blue and green.

Verdict

The one thing I found a bit weird was them going both on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. I suppose that was a good marketing tactic on their part. Having said that, it is a great product, and while the price may seem a bit high, it is right in line with similar items I have tried in the past. A must have if you work in accounts, or similar.
