Oh, I like a gadget that breaks all norms and throws something new in the mix. The QT4090 from Philips is exactly that kind of a beard trimmer. It features, along with all you get with a beard trimmer (more on that later), a built in vacuum, that takes away all that nasty hair that ends up on your sink (and everywhere else) while you trim your beard or shave.

Some basic features

Some basic features that come with the device:

  • Maintenance free blades
  • Multifunctional display
  • Travel Lock
  • Vacuum system captures cut hairs for mess free trimming
  • 18 secured lengths from 1mm to 18mm
  • Precision trimmer for easy contouring and touch ups
  • Stumble comb designed to trim with proper precision
  • Strong battery for optimum power use
  • Turbo power boost buttons boosts cutting and fan (vacuum) speed

Ah, this sounds good. But is it waterproof?

These days we are spoilt for choice when it comes to electric razors and trimmers. Being water or shower safe is something that we have come to expect. So is this magical vacuum featuring trimmer waterproof? No! It isn’t. The simple reason being that the vacuum is built in to suck everything in, and if you can’t keep water out, you can’t really keep it water proof. So this is not water proof, based on its principles. All this may change, but as of now, it all makes perfect sense.

How good is the trimmer?

The trimmer is as good as they get. Normally you wouldn’t even notice the vacuum, because this trimmer definitely doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to giving you a good trim. The precision trimmer works equally well, though to use it you have to change blades/heads. Same goes for the stubble comb, it gives you exactly what you’d hope for.

Turbo boost? What does it really do?

The turbo boost means that the shaver/trimmer cuts faster, as well as the fan speed for your vacuum increases. It definitely increases the vacuum power, but since the trimmer works well enough in normal mode, one doesn’t really need it as much. Good option to have I suppose, specially if you support a very stubborn beard.

Vacuum!

So… the big question. Does it work, and how good is it?

Well, first of all, it works, and it works well. Does the sink look absolutely clean after trimming my beard. Umm, actually, no. It isn’t. However, there is very little hair on it, and anyone who trims their beard knows that the mess created is horrible. With this you get 80-90% of the hair picked up, and that definitely helps a lot.

The vacuum performance also depends on the length of hair you’re trimming off. If you’re trimming off a small bit, then the hair bits will be smaller and easier to pick up. If longer lengths of hair are cut off, it ends up being more difficult, hence you get a bit more mess.

Once again, this shaver makes a bit too much sense!

Where does all that hair go?

All that hair goes into a smart little compartment just below the razor. You can see that in the picture, where the word Philips is written. It opens up like a door, and you can empty that hair into a bin very conveniently. Much like most good vacuums these days.

So does it sound like a vacuum?

Not quite, but the vacuum mechanism in this does mean that it is a lot noisier than your regular trimmers.

More information

More information can be found at the product page. It is available for about £39 from most retailers.

Verdict

I said it earlier, and I am happy to repeat it. I love a gadget that brings something new to me, and this definitely ticks that box. On top of that, it works perfectly as a trimmer, and offers enough features and usability to have it anyway. Then their is the relatively low price. All in all, a great product!
