Nexus 5 – First impressions

Last Thursday, I said to myself – “I will not be fooled like last year and miss the new handset from my favourite line”. That, of course, was about Nexus 4. So this year, I’ve decided not to leave it to chance, and sat down, ten to six in the evening, armed with cup of coffee and a computer mouse, and started the game of “refresh the Google Play store”. And guess what? 15 minutes later I was (technically) a proud owner of brand new white Nexus 5 16GB. And what’s better? It arrived this morning!! So how is it?

N5The box matches the design of the 2013 edition of Nexus 7. Inside we can find: the phone (well, obviously), charger, sim eject tool (this time in a shape of a black circle), quick start guide.

But let’s get down to the phone. Build quality is quite impressive. Phone doesn’t have the glass back (which was also sliding off every possible surface), instead it has matt back, which I have to say is more appealing to me.

After switching it on, screen welcomes you with…. required system update. Oh well, I guess this is nothing new in world of Android really… Quick 130mb update, and we’re off. Connect to Wi-Fi, sync with Google…. and we’re set. Much simpler and faster initial set-up then in previous Nexus phones. Good. And then we see the screen… and we still look at it. In fact, I just had to look at it again. Forget the SGS4, forget the retina (which I had to spend last 2 weeks with while waiting for this phone). This screen is amazing. I mean yes, everyone is looking for different things in screens, but for me? Here? Image is sharp, colours are crisp. The 4.95” screen seems like “just the right size”. Icons are slightly bigger, re-designed. This is screenshot from my Nexus5

Some things have slightly changed in Android 4.4 and and one of the first things you notice is that Hangouts now also take care of your txt messages. So, your Google chats, Hangouts and txt messages are in one place. And it’s cool. Apart from nice box, screen and faster system set-up, the general observation is:

– It’s a fastest phone I held. Practically no lags, everything just flies. Even when I turned on restore from backup and the phone started installing dozens of apps and updating some in same time, and I was jumping from one app to another, the phone was just working. Not stuttering, but working.

– Camera. While I still have to give it a proper test, so far all I can say is that it’s better then N4. It works faster, the images are better. I took some quick test shots, so it might not be the proper field test, it’s something:

2013-11-04 19.56.16 2013-11-04 19.56.27 2013-11-04 20.22.44

So yes. This is Nexus 5 so far. There’s still a lot of testing of course, but for now I can honestly say – love it. In other words – go get one 🙂 If you want that is.
