Samsung Galaxy Round – Our thoughts and opinions

Samsung yesterday announced another new member of the Galaxy family, this time something that comes with a concave screen and is called the Galaxy Round. The phone actually is curved, and supports a flexible screen. Now before we all get too excited, you cannot bend the screen, or change the phone’s shape. It is what it is. However, as the name suggests, it is concave, and that gives it some interesting features.

One thing Samsung have pointed out is that you can tilt the phone to see your notifications. They demonstrate this in the video below:

What do we think about the Galaxy Round? It is definitely an interesting concept, and something new on the market. Is it revolutionary? Probably not. But it seems to have been released to prove a point, perhaps that Samsung are the first ones to come out with such a device. LG, one of their main competitors in Korea are working on a similar thing, and this only makes us look at them with wonder at what they will come out with.

A curved phone, or at least a curved back definitely fits better in your hand. However, using a curved touch screen could prove to be interesting, specially playing games such as Angry Birds. It could also prove to be interesting how this screen reacts to being typed on.

Personally, I think that this is probably the first of many devices we’ll see in the market that come with a curved screen. It won’t be the last, and they have merely opened a door to something that will thoroughly be explored by all the other players on the market. Whether it sticks or not is a different matter. Probably a good use would be wearable technology, but we have already explored that option, and were disappointed when the Galaxy Gear came without one.

Ah well, time will tell how successful this move proves to be.

While we’re on the subject, here are some of the thoughts from our team:

Rupert:

I guess cheeks and thighs (when in pocket) aren’t flat, so it’s a good thing ergonomically (assuming you put it in your pocket the right way around )

Saying that, I wonder if screen glare will be an issue as there will always be some part of the screen reflecting something.

Pierre:

Looks like a gimmick for on a phone but curved screens could be quite useful on bigger screens, like really big TVs or with people who use multiple monitor setups on their desktops.

Jonny:

Not revolutionary in the slightest. I agree with Pierre – curved screens really only become useful when the screen size gets very large (ie computer monitors and TVs).

“Curved” screen on a mobile – dull.

However if that “curved” screen was “flexible”, then we could well have something that was revolutionary…

So, what do you think? Are you looking forward to it? Initially it has only been released in Korea, and I suppose they want to see the market’s reaction to it before they actually bring it to the rest of the world. Overall the specs and the phone itself are very similar to the Galaxy Note 3, apart from lacking the Smart S-Pen.
