Review: Braun CoolTec Shaver

Sometime back I gave you a detailed description of my trip through Braun’s R&D facilities. While we were there, they used the Braun CoolTec as a design example to show us how they work. Now, I bring to you the review of that magical device itself.

What is it?

A shaver that not only captures Braun’s usual great shave, but it actually throws in a cooling element to make your shaving experience more comfortable.

Cooling? Really?

Not sure about you, but I often end up shaving off and on. This is mostly due to the fact that I have sensitive skin, and shaving really irritates it. I often end up with red patches, and get burning sensation on my skin. Balms, shaving creams, moisturisers, they have all been tried. I am sure I am not the only one with this problem either.

This was exactly the kind of feedback that gave Braun the idea to put a cooling element into their shavers. While the details are discussed in my R&D Trip article, they somehow managed to take the cooling element out of a mini-fridge and put it in their shaver!

Look and feel

The shaver feels sturdy in your hand, and has an ergonomic feel meaning that it fits well in your hand and has a non-slip grip. A couple of buttons let you turn the power on as well as turn the cooling element on.

On top, between the shaving blades, you can see a straight strip which is the cooling strip.

CoolTec Key product features

Despite having the cooling element and the heat-sink associated with it, the shaver’s weight is no different from ordinary electric shavers.

On the back is also included a long hair trimmer, for when you have had your stubble grow, or just to neaten your side burns.

On the back are also couple of electric contact points which allow you to charge this. Depending on which model you buy, you get different charging/cleaning stations.

Operation

The operation is straight forward. Press the power button to turn it on. Press the cooling button to activate the cooling element. Obviously, the cooling element takes more power, so if you are on a trip, and forgot your charger, this is a handy way to make your razor last longer.

The razor can be used for both wet and dry shaves, but the cooling element is most efficient when using this during a dry shave.

The experience

Everyone who would use this would definitely be intrigued. Of course, is this just a gimmick, or would it actually work?

Call me a cynic, but despite sitting through the whole R&D meeting, I still wasn’t sure how effective this would be. I am happy to report that it proved me wrong.

The shaving experience is unlike any other. The cooling element not only gives you a more comfortable shaving experience, it also soothes and cools your skin. The cooling also gives you the effect of your skin being moisturised, and the end result is that not only does your skin look smooth and proper, it actually feels pretty soft too.

Before trying this, I always looked at shaving as bit of a chore. Now it is more like brushing my teeth, part of the routine, but at least it doesn’t hurt me.

Verdict

Another one of those amazing devices that initially surprised me, and then proved me wrong. I am definitely sold on this, and if you are part of the shaving club, this is a must have for you!
