We were quite impressed with the Xperia Z when we had a play with it earlier this year:

At IFA this year, they have announced the Z1, with a lot of excitement and rumours to fulfil, this phone does not disappoint:

  • Slim, waterproof and beautiful design
  • True Compact camera performance through G Lens, 20.7MP EXMOR RS for mobile CMOS image sensor, and BIONZ for mobile image processing engine.
  • Innovative camera apps
  • Immersive viewing experience with Sony’s TRILUMINOS Display
  • Sony’s content service

The phone launches globally from this month.

“Xperia Z1 represents a significant milestone for Sony in our continued efforts to deliver unforgettable experiences to our consumers,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. “Not only by bringing the power of Sony to the smartphone and through close collaboration with our partners but by setting a new standard in premium smartphones.”

All about the camera

The camera was a particularly impressive part of the Xperia Z. The Xperia Z1 only promises to improve on that. The numbers suggest that this should be a lot better, Sony do say in their press release that this is the best overall image quality of all leading smartphones. The 27mm wide angle, and the F2.0 aperture definitely suggest so, while high shutter speeds, and 3x clear image zoom should definitely help. Personally, I am very keen to get my hands on it and see how improved this camera really is.

Beautiful Design and experience

Sony have always been known to make beautiful devices, whether they be televisions, sound systems, or indeed cameras. This phone is no less. While it looks very square, it still is beautiful to hold, and very thin and light at the same time.

What we think

Sony are definitely bringing out some exciting devices to the market, but despite offering the waterproof and active lifestyle experience, the phones haven’t done as well as the other competitors, such as the iPhone, Samsung, or even HTC. The Z1 is their chance to get right back in the game, and the timing of this announcement should definitely help, with you know who dropping down chimneys in a few month’s time!
