Outlook.com now has IMAP

A lot of people will happily tell you that if your email ends at @hotmail.com they will happily ignore you. They will not take you seriously, and consider you old school. In fact, even Hotmail themselves don’t take it seriously, as they have rebranded themselves and gone down to calling it Outlook.com, after their famous email client.

When you ask any of the ‘experts’ on the topic, they will often tell you that Hotmail, or Outlook, does not offer IMAP, which is the protocol used by most other email providers, including Google’s Gmail. Up till now, Outlook have only offered POP, which is a very old technology.

Now IMAP is more secure, and it is what works best with most apps, so there is the obvious advantage there.

However, one traditional reason for shifting to IMAP from POP was that if you checked email on more than one computers, or clients, the POP email is always client dependant, and it may show you different emails on different devices, while on IMAP, it is all in sync!

More information, and all the other additional services announced by Outlook.com can be found by reading their blog on the topic:
