4 Ways to Improve the Quality of Your Home Theatre System

If you’re like most people who’ve purchased a home theatre system, you are looking forward to relaxing and experiencing your system.  However, there’s a lot that you can do to get the most out of your system that you may be unaware of.  With maximizing the quality of a home theatre, it’s all about the components.

Receiver

AV receivers are the foundation of a good surround sound set up, are the most critical component of your system.  Take the time to go through your AV receivers menu settings and calibrate it.  Many receivers on the market today feature an Auto-Calibrate option which utilizes a microphone to help you maximize your system.  According to Independence Audio, auto calibration microphones transmit tones to each of your speakers to measure the distance between your speakers and your seat.  By placing the microphone where you’ll sit and using the auto-calibration option, you can maximize the effectiveness of your system with ease.

Speakers

Speakers are the second most important part of your home theatre system, and their proper set up is critical. First, consider the room that your system will be in.  If you are integrating your system into a multi-purpose room, small speakers can blend in and keep your system from being too obtrusive and interfering with everyday life.  If you are building a home theatre room from scratch that will be used almost exclusively for media, you can go all out and purchase large speakers that will give you true theatre quality sound.

This will all mean very little if you don’t properly place your speakers.  Proper speaker placement is practically a science all its own, so it’s a good idea to read up and plan your placement based not only on your specific needs but also based on your limitations.  Electronics retailer Crutchfield has many guides for proper speaker placement based on the type of floor plan your home theatre will occupy. It is a great starting point for figuring out what will work for you.

Inputs

When investing in your home theatre, make sure you get proper cables that will allow for the best signal transfer.  Look for shielded cables with quality connectors to insure that there is no interference with your signal.  Shielded cables will prevent electrical interference from producing an audible “buzz” in your audio signal, as well as stopping signals that can generate “noise” in your picture quality.

Reception Quality

For enjoying the best of prime-time with your home theatre, it’s best to keep in mind the output to your system as only as good as your reception quality.  Choosing between cable and satellite can make all the difference.  While many cable channels are broadcast in the HD format, not all are.  On the other hand, satellite broadcasts are are always in a digital format, so every channel is guaranteed to be in HD.  Storms or other inclement weather can interrupt your satellite signal, but proper placement and installation of your satellite can minimize this problem, and newer dishes incorporate new technologies that offer improved performance.  If you’ve already invested in a killer home theatre system, don’t make the mistake of settling for analogue broadcasts.
