iWatch: Apple’s New Venture in Time

We’ve been hearing about Apple’s sustained interest in producing a smart watch for some time, and now it looks like the release of such a device might not be that far away. Apple has filed for an iWatch trademark in countries around the world, including Japan, Mexico and Taiwan.
We’d heard that Jony Ive and his team of designers were working on a wearable computing project and had been bought a shipment of watches by Ive himself, so this isn’t a massive surprise – but at the same time, for everyone that has been waiting for an alternative to the Pebble or Sony SmartWatch this is good news.
While applying for a trademark isn’t a sure indication of a future product name – indeed, Apple themselves trademarked iSlate back in the days before the iPad – it’s the best one we’ve got that the Apple smart watch project is still continuing. Even if Apple doesn’t plan on launching their smart watch under the iWatch brand, their trademark applications should help prevent competitors from doing so.
With a league of competitors said to be working on their own smart watches – including big names like Samsung, LG, Google, Microsoft, Intel and even Dell – Apple will want to release their product as soon as possible. While Apple usually isn’t the first to market, they are often the first to release a truly polished product, and I’m sure that strategy will remain intact with the iWatch. The watches we’ve seen thus far – from Sony, Pebble and others – haven’t yet broken into the mainstream in the way that an Apple wearable surely would.
What do you make of Apple’s iWatch – would you buy one? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for reading the article and be sure to have a great day!
