Review: iBolt xProDock Vehicle Dock for Samsung Smartphones

The first thing one needs when you buy a new mobile is a decent case. Once this need is fulfilled, you start to realize all the other accessories you use for your phone, and a car holder is one of them. Here we review iBolt xProDock Active Music Vehicle Dock for Samsung Smartphones

What is it?

As the name suggests, it is a vehicle dock for your Samsung Smartphone, and it works with most of the Samsung range out there, and definitely all the Galaxy range, including the S series, as well as the Note series.

So, it holds the phone, what else?

Not just that. It provides your phone with a charging ability, though you have to plug in the phone into a USB charger, which frankly, most cars have these days.

It also packs in what you call ‘Active Music’. This means that the wire opens into a USB and a 3.5mm connector. Sadly, we found this did not work the Galaxy S4, and probably requires some sort of update from the kind folk at Samsung. However, other alternatives which do not pack in this feature are also available.

Car Mode

The fact that this dock is compatible with Samsung smartphones means that the moment you plug it in, the phone goes into Car Dock mode, which can be configured, and has short cuts to make phone calls, using big buttons and easy use while driving. Of course, I personally would not encourage you to use your phone while you are driving.

So, how well does it stick?

Very well indeed. I have just tried to take it off by pulling at it, and it resisted. I like that in a phone dock. You don’t want your phone falling down when you are driving down the motorway at 70 mph. It also includes a flat adhesive pad so you can stick it to your dashboard instead of the wind screen.

The holder also packs in a ‘Ball’ mechanism, which means you can adjust your phone at any angle. A very handy feature indeed!

Size compatibility

A very simple spring loaded mechanism means this can hold various devices, and can hold them tightly with a soft cushion regardless of make and model.

The tabs at the bottom can also be adjusted to come out to take different thickness phones, which means case or no case, your phones should happily live in this little dock.

I like it… where do I get it?

This handy dock can be found at the Mobile Fun website under the Samsung category:

It retails for £39.95.

Verdict

It does everything it says on the tin, and more. The ball connector is something which is almost universal to all mounting options these days, and this makes the windscreen mount compatible with many other devices. The audio not working was bit of a turn off, and it would be nice if it did include a 12V car adapter, but all in all, it doesn’t disappoint. Little attention to details, such as ability to fix on dashboard, angle adjustment, and the care such that the camera of your car is free gives it some nice perks.
