Sony’s other offering in the midpoint price range is the Sony Xperia SP. This beautiful phone has an aluminium frame which gives you the impression of a unibody, yet the back comes off to reveal a SIM slot, a microSD card slot, and funnily enough, a battery that is not removable. Nice and clean build, this phone features an LED transparent element at the bottom which can be personalized to give you notifications as well as react to music.

Specs at a glance:

  • Beautiful aluminium frame.
  • Bright 4.6” 720p HD Reality Display
  • NFC to enable one touch features
  • 4G enabled
  • Transparent Element at the bottom
  • 8MP fast capture camera with HDR, Superior Auto, etc.
  • Battery Stamina Mode
  • 1.7 GHZ Dual Core processor

Look and feel

A good solid phone to hold in your hand. The aluminium frame gives you a good feel. One of the best things you notice on this phone is a dedicated hardware camera button. These are rare on phones these days and they make your photography with mobile phones so much easier and better. While not a big fan of the transparent element at the bottom myself, it is useful and can be customized (or disabled) for your needs. It does feel a bit heavy in your hand.

Mobile Bravia Engine 2

The display comes with the Mobile Bravia Engine 2, which is designed to deliver a sharp and beautiful image based on your content. While we didn’t have enough time to test it out on a lot of scenarios, the few things we tried it with, it really shone and did not fail to impress us.

One Touch Features

Sharing content is what it is all about these days, so these phones come packed in with NFC abilities, letting you share content on your TV, on your media devices, and other such. Clever, simple, and something only the top range of phones feature at the moment.

Camera

The camera is what they talk about with this phone, and for good reason. It may be 8MP, but it is backed by Sony’s Exmor RS for mobile technology, which is designed to work better in low level light. It also features a 16x digital zoom, but that wasn’t really impressive. It does give you HD recording, as well as full HDR effect for picture, with a built in image stabilizer. The ‘Superior Auto’ mode is intelligent enough to adjust settings, and we found this to work to a good effect.

Sound

Featuring 3D Surround Sound speakers, the music in this mobile is designed to impress. With a good clarity and with all the included Walkman features that are well known, this is a good phone to have for anybody who enjoys music and likes to share it with their peers.

A second MIC at the back also works to DSP your voice calls, meaning it cuts out background noise.

Glove Mode

This phone also packs in ‘glove mode’ which means that the screen can be used even when the user is wearing gloves.

Verdict:

This phone actually packs in a lot of meat for not a lot of money. A good quality Android phone, which offers a good camera, a good media experience, a great screen, and packs in the little things like NFC and Glove mode.
