Review: Gerber Crucial

I’ve carried a Swiss army knife my entire life and I think I always will, but recently I’ve had the need of a decent set of pliers so I decided to try out the Gerber “Crucial”. This is Gerber’s striped down multi-tool, to be hung off trousers or a rucksack for occasional use.

First an important notice, this multi tool cannot legally be carried in the UK. The law states:

It is illegal to carry a knife in public without good reason – unless it’s a knife with a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62 cm) or less, eg a Swiss Army knife.

As this has a locking blade that means it’s not covered by the folding blade exception.

Now that’s out of the way on to my thoughts about the multi-tool it feels nice to hold and is a good shape to hold in my hand. The knife blade sits nicely enabling good control especially for small detailed work.

The pillars are good for things you would generally use needle nose pillars for, but anything bigger is difficult.  They seem to have been designed to allow better grip and not really long term comfort. After a few uses it starts to dig in a little. Both the screw drivers lock into place nicely and work well, but the bulk of the multi tool does get in the way for some jobs.

I can’t see a lot of use for the bottle opener other than it looks nice when opening a bottle. That’s what is different about this  multi-tool. Somme features are more about looking good than any other particular use and that’s what makes it stand out, and why I like it so much.
