Tablets will be dead–BlackBerry CEO

Thorsten Heins, CEO Blackberry has today made his opinions on tablets very clear. He thinks that they will be dead in 5 years. Is that the opinion of a company’s CEO who has failed to sell many tablets, or is this a very clever observation by somebody who perhaps understands the way technology has been moving in the last few years.

Personally, we were surprised and a bit shock at his statement. So I thought, I’ll write something down. Not sure what or why, but I think it deserved a discussion. Or at least some observations or ideas. See to us, this statement is almost similar to the Xerox people finding the concept of the mouse hilarious. The concept of the car being weird in the early part of the 20th century.

So what do we think? We think tablets are here to stay. We also heard opinions that nobody really needs a tablet, but most of us want a tablet. I have to say, before I got one (Nexus 7), I definitely believed that I did not need it, but definitely wanted it. As I got it and started to use it, I have realized it is a very handy tool which forms a nice medium between phones and computers.

So is the tablet under threat from phablets, or the likes of Galaxy Note and Mega? Or is it under threat from the new line of Ultrabooks? Or is it under threat from the likes of Microsoft Surface, which some may argue, is a tablet itself.

So… what is it then? Personally I think it is a matter of nomenclature and evolution. Mobiles have had a long time to evolve in our hands, and have got to the stage where they are today after more than 10 years of evolution. Tablets are quite young, and have a long way to go.

I may agree that yes, the tablet of today may not exist in 5 years from now, but I definitely think they will be around, and in a better way.

Lets wait and see, eh!

  1. Sounds to me like Thorsten Heins is just really bitter about tablets because of the god-awful flop that was the Blackberry Playbook…
