Review: Mophie juice pack air

Anyone who read my article on the Snugg livewire, or who happened to see my tweet linking to the Twitter #music app screenshots post will know that I suffer terribly from a phone battery that depletes rather too quickly for my liking.
Yes, sure, there are plenty of things I can do to get more juice from my Apple – turn off inactive  wifi and bluetooth connections, reduce my screen brightness, turn off location services etc. But all these things detract from how I like to use my phone. Why should I have to sacrifice my user enjoyment just so I can make my phone last a full day without charging?
My usual trick is to buy loads of extra chargers and have them dotted around the various areas of my life so that I never find myself more than a few metres away from a charging spot. But this simply isn’t always possible. Thankfully the guys at Mophie have just the thing for us (two things, in fact).
Mophie has become synonymous with excellent on-the-go charging solutions over recent years, and their iPhone charging cases in particular have proven to be extremely popular. With Apple’s switch to the new Lightning connector (and the strict requirements for Its third-party Lightning Accessory Program) it has taken accessories manufacturers a little while to start bringing out Lightning compatible products. Thankfully they have managed to overcome the difficulties, and are now bringing us not one, but TWO, charger cases that are designed for the iPhone 5: the juice pack air, and the juice pack heluim.
We at oxGadgets have been lucky enough to get our hands on a juice pack air and I have been testing it out over the last few days.
My first impressions of the juice pack air is that it is a beautiful device. I normally do not like to use iPhone cases, as I feel it is a shame to cover up something that Sir Jony Ive has worked so hard to make so perfect. But in the case of Mophie’s devices, I feel they are designed and crafted with the same high level of attention to detail, and so was happy to use it. It comes in three flavours: black, white or (PRODUCT)RED. As you will see I have the red flavour, and I think I think it is delicious!
The case is charged using a standard micro-USB cable, and 4 bright LEDs on the back provide an indication of the charge that is remaining. Due to the new position of the headphone socket on the iPhone 5, there is a deeply recessed feed-through hole that allows you to plug your headphones in. This is no problem with the standard issue Apple headphones, but some headphones may struggle to be plugged directly in to the phone when it has the charger case fitted, and so they also provide a short headphone socket extender cable to solve this.
The juice pack air is the heavier duty of the two charger cases. The helium is slightly thinner and lighter, but even so, the air does not make the iPhone overly bulky or heavy. The air provides more battery capacity than the helium, and I found that I could get roughly an extra 7590% battery life when I was using it.
Overall, I was extremely impressed by the Mophie juice pack air, and I cannot recommend it more highly to anyone with an iPhone 5.
