There are quite a few tiny portable Bluetooth speakers on the market at the moment, and here we review the KitSound Portable Bluetooth Speaker.

In the box

  • Speaker
  • Manual/safety instructions
  • 3.5mm/USB to mini-USB cable

Look and Feel

First thing you notice about these, as you take them out of the box is how tiny they are. At less than 50mm high, and 60mm in diameter, these are really tiny, making them not just portable, but a very handy thing to have on your desk. This also means they are very light. What we love even more is the soft touch rubberised feel, something that used to be only found inside cars, and can now be seen on many gadgets.

The speaker is on top, with a flick on/off switch as well as an indicator LED. A small hole for a MIC allows you to use these speakers as a headphone as well.

Pairing

Pairing is pretty seamless. If on turning on, the device cannot pair to it’s last connected device, they will go into pairing mode (which is blue/red LED alternating), and hence can pair with more devices.

Sound Quality

For something this small, the speakers are very impressive. However we found the sound to be a bit treble heavy and tinny. The bass wasn’t very well defined. However, for use as general speakers, they are perfectly fine. They also work quite well for movies. Being a ‘single’ speaker, they obviously do not provide any stereo experience either. There is no volume control on these, so volume has to be controlled by the device these are paired to.

The 3.5mm cable can also be used to connect these to any 3.5mm output.

Call Quality

These speakers can also be used to make calls. However, there is no accept/reject button on these speakers, so a call has to be made/rejected through the phone. This means that they are not really great as a hands free device, but really good as a speaker experience. The MIC works well, but once again, nothing magical.

Verdict

These speakers are a matter of trade offs. The small size and the soft touch feel make them really impressive. However, the sound quality is above average, but would not blow you away. The portability makes them amazing, and whether you like them or not, you’d put them in your bag or on your desk to use anyway. They are better than in-built speakers, and obviously that makes them worth it.
