@GadgetShowLive 13: Some highlights

By Sami Mughal

Gadget Show Live, one of UK’s biggest showcases of the latest technologies and gadgets has been on this week, and we had the chance to visit it. I thought I’d highlight some of the things I found amazing at the show, and while the list may be different for different people, this is my list. We also had our Editor Becca visit it, and she’ll upload her list soon as well.

Parax Paper – Paper made out of stone

Sounds unbelievable doesn’t it? Well technically it is made out of Calcium Carbonate and a high density non-toxic plastic. This means that not only is the paper resistant to tearing and water, it is also economically friendly. I have a brochure from them and a visiting card that I have left in a glass of water and it comes out exactly as it goes in, and will not let me tear it either. On top of that, being made of Calcium Carbonate, it will return to it’s natural form within 12 months.

LG – Ultra HD 84 inch TV

2013-04-02 14.52.35

Showing off pictures of Ultra HD or HD even on a website is much like showing off that technology on a regular TV. It just doesn’t do it justice. This beautiful TV with 84 inches of screen, and the latest kind of HD, Ultra HD, which packs in 4 times as much resolution as HD, this TV really made an impression on me. I can’t afford it, but someday I will have this or something from its family in my living room!

At £20k, the price is a bit steep, but if you want a theatrical experience, this i the beauty for you.

Holoxica

Holograms are just awesome, aren’t they. They have been the future for about 50 years, and all we know is that in a galaxy far far away, a long long time ago, they are the normal way of communicating with other people. Luckily, the future is not that far off, as you can see from the video above. Holoxica are an Edinburgh based company and they have unveiled interactive 3D displays at the Gadget Show Live. All I can say is that the video I have posted above does not do justice to the experience! Check them out at the following link:

Necomimi Cat Ears

Another one of those quirky technologies that always bring a smile to your face. How about controlling ears on a headset with just your brainwaves. Excited, the ears perk up. Concentrating, they wiggle. Relaxed, they flatten down. I gave it a go, and while I wasn’t able to do much talking with the ears, it is nevertheless something that really stands out. It also means that it will only get better from here on, and you could probably drive a car with your brainwaves at some stage. Check them out at the following link:

Thatch Industries Raptor Unicycle

The unicycle by Thatch Industries gets a special mention not just for what it is, but also because this is a home made project by Nick Thatcher. Based on the same principle as a Segway, this self balancing unicycle can go up to 15 miles an hour. It takes some learning, but it definitely has potential, and between you and me, it looks a lot cooler than riding a Segway!

3D Printers

There were quite a few companies showcasing 3D printing at Gadget Show Live, and while I have been aware of the process for quite a few years, and used it in my daily work, it still excites me. There was MakerBot as well as a printer and kit available from RP Techworks.

Microsoft 3D Scanning

If you think 3D Printing is exciting, check out 3D Scanning. Microsoft on their booth had a 3D scanner, using their Kinect technology. While I didn’t get a chance to go on it myself, it had a lot of interest, and you can actually see some hands on experience at the following link:

Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 2 Tablet

image

This tablet has it all. Quad Core processor. Quad core graphics. Expandable memory. Bluetooth. Wifi. 1280 x 800 resolution. And all this at £220. These figures make it a serious contender when it comes to tablets, and at that price, it is almost a no-brainer. Already available at Ebuyer!

Lenovo 27” IdeaCenter Horizon Multimode Table PC

image

Remember the Microsoft Surface, which was actually a table, and not the tablet they are selling now? Well Lenovo took that idea, put a tablet on a 27” screen, and turned it into a high spec computer. Playing table hockey on your tablet sound a bit ridiculous? I beg to differ. I saw this in action and boy does it look and feel good. And yeah, once you are done, you can perch it up as a monitor, and using your wireless keyboard and mouse. Featuring an i7 processor, Windows 8, and high specs overall, this is definitely one to watch out for. A release is expected sometime this summer, and definitely one to watch out for.
