Trialling Nokia Lumia 820-Day 2-4

By Sami Mughal

Trial on day 2 has gone better than day 1, but I am not sure whether I am getting more used to the new OS or whether I am missing my HTC ONE X less. Here are some of the notes from today:

  • Battery is quite small, which means it charges in under 2 hours. However, it doesn’t draw as much once you have turned off unwanted services such as Location, Mobile Data, Wifi when not using it.
  • I found this app called Connectivity Shortcuts which allows you to put shortcuts to the options mentioned above, which sorts the issue of not having connectivity options available on the home screen in the form of widgets.
  • The Twitter app kept crashing. Had to install another app called Rowi which works quite good so far.
  • Definitely miss Google Apps, most equivalents are quite bad.
  • Nokia Maps is a very good Google Maps alternative.
  • The touch screen can work with gloves. That is a very good feature which you often wish existed on all touch screen devices. It didn’t work well around freezing temperatures with really thick woolly gloves. However, my regular cycling gloves worked fine.
  • Still missing the features and the choice of apps available.
  • The customization that Android offers you is not available, and I am definitely missing it.

One of the positives that needs its own mention is Nokia Drive. While there are a lot of navigation software out there, Nokia pack in their own voice to voice navigation. You can download maps and run it on it’s own without needing any mobile connection, which makes it better than many of the free software available there. I haven’t tried it out yet, but so far I have tried to route and realized that the search feature is not very good on this. You need to know how to ‘write’ your destination. This can be a post code or a house number, street, city format. However, searching addresses, it takes you close but doesn’t really take you to the exact house. There will be more on that as I try it out today. To remember is the fact that Nokia Drive is still in Beta phase.
