Review: Desk Genie

The very name ‘Desk Genie’ (http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/desk-genie-non-slip-charging-desk-stand-p22432.htm) inspires a lot of wonder as well as scepticism. However, to say that I am impressed would be an understatement. I ordered this contraption that comes with many promises mostly out of curiosity, but the fact that it has delivered everything on the list definitely gives it a good rating.

The Desk Genie is something that looks like a tradition mobile phone dock, and quite frankly, is one. However, unlike the traditional phone docks that provide a ‘holding’ mechanism for the phone, such as supports, clips, this provides a non-slip surface, which you leave your phone on. It really is as simple as that. It is angled at about 45 degrees, a good viewing angle, and the non-slip surface works quite well. I have tried it on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S), which is one of the heavier lots these days, and it works quite well. It even works in landscape mode. And it works with the leather casing I have on top of it. I have also tried a few Nokia phones I had lying around, and the phone holder works quite well, almost like magic. Perhaps the Desk Genie does have some magic to it!

It does not leave a sticky residue either, which I was scared of.

However, this is not all. It has also packed in itself, a USB hub (2 x USB Ports), an 8-in-1 memory card reader, and a built in charger. It is powered through a USB port from your computer.

Installation, like most other USB ports was seamless. You plug it in, give it a few seconds, and it is good to go.

The 2 x USB ports work as promised.

The 8 in 1 memory card reader also offers the same functionality. The good thing is that it is focussed more around the modern mobiles rather than cameras, which means it offers support for M2 and Micro SD, but lacks a port to plug in a CF card.

The phone charger is plugged in through a power port on the back of the device. It promises to deliver 5V at 1.2A. What that means is that it can charge anything at roughly the same speed as what it would be charged at if it was plugged into your USB port. It offers connectors for most devices out there.

Overall, I am very impressed with this very economical device. It is being sold at prices of £11-15 on different websites, and quite frankly, for the features it offers, it is well worth it!

Specs:

  •  Holds different sized phones/portable devices on the surface
  • 2 x 2.0 USB ports
  • Plug and Play
  • Memory card reader for: M2, MS, MS Pro Duo, SD, MMC, RS MMC, Mini SD, MicroSD
  • Charging capability for iPhone/iPod, Nokia (2mm & 3.5mm), Sony Ericsson, Mini USB, Micro USB, Samsung Tip1 and Tip 2, LG

Pros:

  • The surface quite frankly feels like magic.
  • Lot of functionality packed into a small , low cost device.
  • Almost universal connectivity

Cons:

  • The build quality has a ‘cheap’ feel about it.
  • The packaging could have used a bit more work.
  • Box actually calls it DESK WIZARD even though the product is sold as DESK GENIE

However, for the cost, I am happy to let go of all the above.

Overall I found this a very satisfying product, and at only £11.95 from http://mobilefun.co.uk, it is a great value for money.

I have to thank www.mobilefun.co.uk for sending this out to review for me. If you want mobile phone speakers, mobile phone docks,  laptop/notebook accessories, iPod/iPhone/iPad accessories,  or other mobile accessories, MobileFun is a great site to visit.
