WiZ Colours WiFi Connected Smart LED Bulbs

The world is full of smart bulb solutions. They have often been complicated, expensive and need. WiZ is a relatively new player on the market. They have a slightly different approach. Not only do their bulbs and lamps run without the need for a hub, they also throw in an IR based remote, so you can run your lights without the need for an app.

WiZ Colours Smart Bulbs – Features

  • Control all lights wherever you are with the smartphone app for iOS and Android
  • Control your lights through the infrared remote (sold separately), voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Home (sold separately), and your existing switches – which are now enhanced with the WiZclick feature
  • WiFi connected light (instant pairing). No hub or bridge needed
  • 64 000 shades of white (2200K to 6500K), 16 million colours with dynamic light modes and dimming function (no dimmer switch needed)
  • Preset well-being modes, light schedules and vacation mode.

In the box

We reviewed the B22 2xWiZ Colours Smart LED + WizMote pack, and as expected it comes with all that:

  • 2 x WiZ Colour Smart Bulbs (B22)
  • 1 x WiZmote
  • Quick Start Guide

Setup

The set up is reasonably simple. The Quick Start Guide helps you through the process. You turn the device on, make sure your phone is on a 2.4GHz WiFi, and take it from there. Once paired, the bulb is connected to your WiFi and is accessible all across the world. A handy feature is allowing you to sign in anonymously, which disables this, but allows you to use your bulbs/lamps without the need of an account.

You can also name and locate your bulbs/lamps, meaning you know which one you are turning on or off.

The app

The app works via the WiFi. Once setup, you can control your bulbs and lamps via your current location (e.g. home or office), room of choice and then lamp of choice. Each lamp can further be configured to 4 of your favourite modes, as well as on or off modes, etc. You can also simply adjust the settings in the form of colour or brightness.

These come with some options and presets, but you can change them as you like. Examples are regular light/coloured light, as well as modes which emulate fire (flickering yellow) or forest (flickering green).

The app can also be used to schedule the turning on or off of the bulbs, giving you some extra bit of simulated security while you are away from home.

Furthermore, you are also allowed to integrate it Google Home, Alexa and IFTTT.

While integration with IFTTT and Google Home works reasonably well, Alexa is a bit clunky. Since all of this relies on software, there is a chance that this will improve over time.

The WiZmote

The remote, or WiZmote as they like to call it, is a simple and basic device. The basic advantage is that you don’t need to use an app every time you want to turn these on or off.

The remote lets you point it towards a lamp or bulb, and turn it on, off, shift to night mode (i.e. night light) or choose one of your four favourite modes. You can also adjust brightness through it.

I had both the bulbs set up in the same room. Sometimes only one would react to the remote. Sometimes both would. It didn’t seem to be a directional thing. Occasionally, I also had to press and hold the buttons for it to register a command.

WiZclick

Another feature in the device is integrated into your light on/off switch. If you configure your modes properly, a simple on will always take you to your mode 1 on your bulbs or lamps. Double click (i.e. a quick on-off-on) will take you to your second mode.

The light

Like all smart bulbs, the change in light colour and brightness was pretty digital. This isn’t a problem, merely an observation. The bulbs were bright enough in my living room, and the various colours were great.

However, I didn’t find the fancy flickering light modes useful. Personal taste, perhaps.

All in all, it does what it is supposed to do, whether you use the simple on/off switch, the remote, the app or one of your smart speakers.
