Review: Motion Control Drone – fly your drone the easy way

Like it or not, drones are here to stay. In fact, having a drone is right up there on the Christmas gift wish list! Cool (or annoying) as they may be, they are often rather difficult to fly and manoeuvre. Not everyone is cut out to be a pilot, and the same applies to people who fly drones. The Motion Control Drone, available from MenKind, looks to fix that, using hand gesture control.

  • Manual

Look and feel

The drone itself is a rather small device, not unlike many drones these days. It weighs a few grams and can happily sit in the palm of your hand. The overdesign is rather fragile, but once again that is needed to keep it light.

You get a bunch of LEDs around it to see it while you fly, and they should help you find it if you fly it in the dark.

A small battery, rechargeable via USB, slots in the bottom.

The remote itself is designed to fit in the palm of your hand. You slide your fingers in the finger holder on the top of your device, which lets you keep your thumb on the yellow joystick/button on the side. This button allows you to do everything while your hand gesture allows you to set the direction of movement.

The remote is rather light itself and requires 3xAAA batteries to run. Sadly they didn’t come in the box, not that they are uncommon.

Setup

The setup is reasonably simple:

  • Put the blades on
  • Charge the battery for the drone via USB
  • Pop the battery in the drone
  • Pop the AAA batteries in the remote
  • Press the yellow joystick button to let the drone fly!

Fly your drone the easy way!

The simple fact is that it is rather difficult to fly these beasts. You often have to rely on a big clunky remote that comes with two joysticks, one for direction while the other controls the speed/flight.

The hand gesture remote gets rid of one of those by simply letting your hand do the direction control. Tilt your hand left, right, back or forward, and see your drone fly in those directions.

You still need to use the yellow button/joystick to control flight/airtime, but simple gestures let you control the direction of travel. The result? Suddenly you have a drone that is rather easy to use. Hence, a lot more fun!

This means that you can easily share the experience with friends or even little kids. Of course, due care should be taken when flying drones, and they do need to comply with CAA guidelines in the UK.

Tips and Tricks

Of course, your device needs to do some tricks or at least be really simple to use. This little device definitely ticks the box:

  • Simply click the button for auto take-off or landing
  • It automatically holds the altitude if you leave it to be. This means you don’t need to keep constant control over your device while you show off your glee to your mates.
  • Push the trigger on the side and watch your drone do 360-degree flips.
