The Rise of Sleep Technology

Sleep is something we all have in common, but getting enough of it can be a challenge. With an estimated 1 in 3 people suffering insomnia at some point in their lives, it seems that, for many of us, restful slumber remains nothing more than a dream. But what if there was a gadget – or even several – that could make it happen? Sleep technology is on the rise, and we will explore some of the most promising options on the market.

Light Science

Light is one of the most influential factors when it comes to circadian rhythms – or sleep/wake cycles. It is, therefore, no surprise that many gadgets on the market focus on using light to facilitate sleep. One of the newest players to enter the game is Circadia, the world’s first contactless sleep sensor coupled with a portable smart therapy lamp. Together with the Circadia app, the system claims to monitor, model and resync your body clock to improve the quality of your sleep – all through the power of light. The product has just launched on Kickstarter, where you can find out more about all of its functions and features.

Smart Bedding

Sleep technology is not just about apps and wearables; even beds and bedding are getting smarter. Some of the more out-there inventions include a bed which can diffuse an episode of snoring by automatically adjusting its position when snoring is detected. However, technology is more common in bedding than you might think, and you don’t necessarily have to go gadget crazy to benefit. If comfort is your issue, a smart memory foam mattress could just as easily do the trick. Companies like Eve are revolutionising the mattress market with temperature control technology and next generation memory foam – a composition that sleep fanatics everywhere seem to love.

Sound Innovation

If noise pollution is keeping you awake, there’s a gadget for that too. White noise has long been used to help induce sleep, but recent technology has stepped it up a notch. Nightingale is a smart home sleep system that not only drowns out both indoor and outdoor noises, but also gives you a range of fifteen different sound blankets to choose from depending on the room you’re in. For light sleepers who struggle to doze off, such innovations in sound-based technology could finally provide the solution.

As sleep technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, that perfect night’s sleep could be more achievable than ever. Of course, not all gadgets have their place in the bedroom; too much technology may actually ruin your chances of a restful slumber. Either way, the sleep market is huge – who knows what snooze-inducing gadgets may come out next?
