Epson EH-TW5300 Review: Big Screen Magic At Home

There’s something magical about watching a movie on the big screen that you just don’t get on televisions, no matter how modern and sophisticated that TV might be. With the rising cost of cinema trips and the current financial climate, going to the cinema to see every movie you want to see isn’t a possibility any more for many of us. That’s where a projector might come in handy. I was given the chance to review an Epson EH-TW5300 and test it for myself. My initial thoughts were, what am I going to do with a projector? Now, having tried it, I can see the possibilities.

My first impression of this projector was that it had a pretty impressive specification. Epson promise that you can watch a movie every day for the next 11 years and this is down to the life of the bulb. Basing it on a film length of 105 minutes and using the projector in eco mode, this would last 7500 hours, which equates to roughly 11 years. It broadcasts images in HD, is 3D capable and has a built-in 5W speaker. It also features vertical/horizon keystone correction for ease of set-up and positioning. It has high White and Colour Light Output of 2,200 lumens and 35,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio so you’re guaranteed vivid colours and deep blacks. It can also convert standard 2D video into 3D which is one of the things that appeals to me, and it delivers full HD up to 332 inches.

One of the things that surprised me about the projector is how heavy it is. Of course, it would be, but the appearance of it is so sleek and compact that I somehow expected it to be lighter. Having said that, this is a good thing because it is sturdy and durable but at the same time, won’t take up too much space in your home. The device is white, weights 2.9kg and measures in at 297x255x144mm. It is controlled using buttons on the top of the device. Also, something that was important for me personally is that it was quiet. It made only a very light hum, no louder than an average laptop. It connects to other devices in a number of ways. It has a USB 2.0 Type A, USB 2.0 Type Mini-B, VGA in, HDMI in (2x), Composite in, MHL, Stereo mini jack audio out and Cinch audio in.

It comes with some optional accessories such as 3D glasses, ceiling mounts and a lamp. I didn’t get to try those but used my own 3D glasses to test it out and was pleased to find that the claims it makes to convert 2D to 3D are correct.

It’s super easy to set up. It’s as simple as connecting it to your laptop and pointing it at a bare wall. The sound quality is crystal clear but it was the quality of images it broadcasts that really impressed me. The first time I used it, I connected it to a digital camera and looked through some photos, not knowing what to expect and I can confirm that the detail and clarity was incredible. The colours were vibrant and authentic. I liked it a lot!

Obviously, I had a limited amount of time to test this so I can’t comment on whether the claim that you can watch movies every day for 11 years is true, but with an RRP of £529.99, I can see how this would provide cinema quality viewing in the comfort of your own home, at a bargain price. So, what seems like an expensive, luxury item might be a worthwhile investment for those who love the big screen experience.

  1. I first saw an overhead projector used around 25 years ago at a training session my employer at the time was running. I was blown away by the quality but brought back to earth by the price back then, which was around £3000.
This review has awakened my interest in projectors again, especially by the price quoted in the article!
Another top review, Lacey. Thanks for the amount of technical detail in the review as well .. excellent! 🙂
