Shaw Academy: Online courses with their 1-2-1-2-many philosophy

Buzzoole

In today’s busy world, it is rather difficult to fit in time to study. A lot of struggle to fit in the ability to commute to work, come back home, and then go out again to study or attend classes. Online courses and classes have offered people a wide variety of ways to study using just your computer and an internet connection. However, the experience lacks bilateral relationship with your teacher or instructor, and doesn’t allow you to ask any live questions.

We do have webinars, but they are often focused around a sponsored topic or product, so they don’t quite fit the need either.

Shaw Academy saw this problem and looked to solve it by giving students the ability to attend live classes from the comfort of their home. The idea is simple, and not that far off from a webinar. You stay at home, you login online and you see a screen which has your teacher’s presentation on it. You also listen to them speaking live, and see them make notes or scribble in front of you. You also have the ability to ask them questions mid-lecture, or at the end.

This is something Shaw Academy calls 1-2-1-2 many kind of education.

Now generally, this is where I can stop and let you visit their website so you can explore all the options available. However, I will carry on to explain the courses available, the course I tried myself, and what my experience was like.

Shaw Academy offers you courses on all sorts of topics, from creative stuff such as marketing and photography to serious stuff such as business. A lot of the courses end in giving you diplomas or advanced diplomas. On top of all of this, your courses are also NUS accredited, so you may even qualify for a NUS Extra card.

I tried Shaw Academy during the autumn of last year. The course I tried was Digital Marketing which was divided into 6 weeks of classes, every Tuesday. The classes went between half 7 to 9, and the interaction and the material was great. There were plenty of links to follow up and reference material to enjoy and read up on. The tutor was also available via email, and the best of all, also via Twitter!

The course included assignments, which you are tested on, and that is how you end up getting your diploma.

Overall, I found it a good experience, though the curse of the online course hit me, and I wasn’t able to finish the live lectures! Bad bad behaviour on my part, and sadly that is all too common when it comes to online courses. As such, I would definitely recommend that anybody doing any kind of course definitely commit to finishing it!

So, how does Shaw Academy work in terms of finances? You can buy a lifetime membership, which normally costs £999, but may be 90% off if you’re lucky (it was a few days ago), or you can pay a monthly fee and do as many courses as you like. Either way, it seems like a pretty good deal. I did the smaller option myself. Of course, like many great things on the internet, you get a chance to try a free trial before you commit. I’d suggest most users to go with that, as why not!

Give it a go, see if you like any courses, and commit! You’ve got nothing to lose and all to gain!
