Review: Monster iSport Compete – Ready, Set, Go!

Monster are a well known brand when it comes to headphones. We recently looked at the Monster Elements which promise a great sound on a high tech device. They also focus on the fit and active, and their iSport range caters to that niche. We looked at the iSport Strive a little while back, and found it to be a great set of running and being active. Today we look at the iSport Compete, which offers the same kind of performance, in a headset designed to be plugged into your phone.

Look and Feel

The headphones sport the classic in-ear clips that can be found on the other Monster iSport range. There is a certain knack to wearing these, but once in, they stay in, no matter how hard you run or bounce or jump about. A range of sizes come in the box so you can try what works best for your ears.

Below the earphones is a button that allows you to make/take calls, as well as pause and play music.

It also sports a flat cable, which means that it stays relatively free of tangles. It comes in two colours, lime green and sky blue.

Fit and comfort

As we mentioned in the iSport Strive review, the in-ear clips take a little getting used to. They may be a bit more complicated than the usual sporty headsets out there, but there is an advantage to that. Once in, they don’t really pop out as some of the other ones do. Put them in, and run and jump and do as many lunges as you like, and they stay in. You normally find Bluetooth ones are better, being a smaller cable and less to pull on, but with a cable that plugs into your phone, this is even more important.

Once in, they are reasonably comfortable. Since they provide a high level of noise isolation, they are a bit more noticeable than some. However, they can easily sit in your ears for a few hours without you feeling overly tired.

Sound Quality

A bit bass heavy, which is quite common for in-ear headphone. The sound is deep and clear, and you can really hear those beats to keep you active. The edge comes from the high level of noise isolation these provide. This is great when you’re at the gym or want to cut out any outside or environmental noise. However, if like me you run or cycle along roads or public paths, you may need to make sure you keep an extra eye out for any traffic or other runners/cyclists.

More information

More information on the Monster iSport Compete can be found on their website. They retail for €49.95 and can be bought directly from the website. While not yet available, you can also pre-order them via Amazon.

Verdict

Great fitting headphones that give you high level of sound isolation and a deeper sound. Ideal for people who struggle to keep their headphones in while exercising.
