Review and Giveaway: Panasonic SC-RB5 – Place It – Bass It

SC-RB5-lifestyle

We have seen speakers evolve over the last few years manifold. Many a tiny speaker is sold with a lot of oomph, but it is obviously difficult to pack in a lot of power in them. Panasonic have a better idea. Using good old physics, they have packed in the power of resonance into a speaker, letting you turn pretty much any surface into a speaker. The result? A small speaker giving you various amount of power and more importantly, various amounts of bass and oomph every time it is placed on a different surface. Worrying about volume is not really a concern any more!

Specifications

  • Vibration Speaker – turns any surface into a speaker
  • Bluetooth compatible
  • AUX IN
  • Bass Boost Feature
  • IPX4 – Splash proof

Look and Feel

SC RB5-1

The speaker itself is tiny, and features a small cylindrical shape. It features a glowing blue circle around it when it is on.

The top has LEDs which also serve as buttons for Volume and status. While the main speaker power comes from vibration bit at the bottom, another speaker grill is present on top for when you haven’t attached this to anything.

On one of the sides you have the ports to charge as well as audio, as well as a power button.

Sc-rb5-3

And you have the classic charging button as is found on most rechargeable devices.

The bottom thing, which looks like a stand is the main vibration bit that goes onto surfaces.

Bluetooth Setup

It is a fairly basic setup. As per most Bluetooth items, you turn the speaker on, look for it via your phone or other device, pair, and off you go.

You can also use Audio In if you prefer.

Performance and Sound Quality

So this little device (little beast) packs in quite a punch, using the power of resonance to create more powerful sound than most speakers this size will give you. To do so, you turn this device on, and you will notice a gentle sound coming from the speaker on top. As you place it on different surfaces, you will notice different levels of sounds, as it basically makes the different devices it is placed on vibrate to the frequency of music, and hence creating an impromptu speaker.

The sound quality varies per different surface, but it is always interesting. The obvious ones are using wooden surfaces and tables, and you get a good sound from them. Using boxes gives you an even deeper experience, as it lets the sound bounce around in there.

The best one though, is using metallic boxes and metallic surfaces, as just by their very nature they are good at vibrating. This means that metallic cabinets are absolutely brilliant for this.

And the bigger the surface or box, the better the sound.

So, will you blow the DJ away? Not quite, not at this size, but it is great for a decent sized room, specially for the portability it offers.

More information

Surprisingly I could not find this on the UK website of Panasonic. However, other websites do have it, so it is linked here.
